Supersonic/Electronic Weapon 不特定多数による長期にわたる原因不明の嫌がらせ(6)

2012/03/31( Sat)
I went to Neyagawa, Osaka, Tuesday morning and came back on Friday night, actually very early morning of Saturday. My mother passed away and I was there for her.

It’s 23:26 on Saturday. I’m very sleepy. While I was in Neyagawa, I had little sleep. 30 minutes on Tuesday night, 3 -4 hours on Wednesday night, and Zero hours on Thursday night. Last night, I slept about 7 hours, plus about 3 hours of nap in the Shinkansen on my way back, but I am still sleepy.

I may be write the detail later. My schedule is tight over the next 9 days because I got four private lessons at Chofu next Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Tuesday after the next.

I’m sleepy. I’m going to bed now.

One strange thing that stack to my mind was that father said in his speech at the wake ceremony that all three of his daughters were married, which was a lie. I have never been married…

Supersonic/Electronic Weapon 不特定多数による長期にわたる原因不明の嫌がらせ(6)

2012/03/26 (Mon) Went to bed around 0:20. Slept form 0:30 – 6:30 (6 hrs).
-0:46 2-3 e-shocks to brain
0:59 1 fit or something
around 6:30 woke/woken up
7:10 unnatural cough of a middle-aged male outside between the next house and my apartment building
around 7:20 call from home
7:46 1 e-chock to brain

My mother has been in a coma since last night. No chances of recovery and the next five days will be critical, says the doctor according to my father. She had been sleeping a lot but waking up. She walked to the bathroom yesterday morning.

I have been thinking over the past few days that it’s been a while since I last heard the game/car-like noise. If the nice and kind people I often mention in this blog has anything to do with it, and for many other things that have been going on making my life easier, thank you very much. Sorry I cannot be so happy because of my mother’s condition.

The rest of the record: Left home earlier to do paper work (wage report) , had lessons (19:00-20:40 + 15-minute extension answering students’ questions) at Shibuya, finished class and left school a little before 21:00, as there was no phone call from home, I came back to my station a little before 22:00. Bought food, and got home a little after 22:00.

There was a massage of my father on my home phone to call him back. I did and was told that the doctor is saying my mother might last only a couple of days, not conscious. She is not suffering at all. I asked him why he did not call me on the cell phone and the I would have gone home if I had been told the condition. My father said that he did not call me on my cell phone because I was working.

I forgot to write the rest of the record and went to bed around 0:00. Woken up by e-shocks and now writing this record.

There were more harassers than usual all day. Some weird old men looked into my eyes on my way to and from school.

There were some people who were nice to me, too.

A strange incident was that a teacher at Shibuya school was walking a few meters away from me at Kiyosumishirakawa, the last station of some Hanzomon-line trains from Shibuya, while I was waiting for the train to Oshiage, where I change trains. We had a small talk a few seconds. He said he lives in the town of the next station.

Class Supplement, TOEFL Essay, Should university students be required to attend classes?

Writing Topic
Some educators and students believe that it should be required for university students to go to classes. Other people think that attending classes should be a choice that students have the right to make for themselves. Which opinion do you share? Explain your opinion using specific reasons.

☆ “Should…?” question with hints
The second view given in the writing topic makes it a point that university students have the right to decide whether they attend classes or not. The thing to remember is that we are talking about a rule at university. Unlike compulsory education, many things are left to each individual’s decision at university, for example, what subjects to study. Also, unlike high school, which is not really compulsory but many things are decided by the school authority, university allows more freedom and promote self-discipline of students. Who has the authority on class attendance at university, the school, the professor, or the student?

The word “should” is also used to promote or prevent some results. We say, “You should study harder,” to raise someone’s test scores or “You shouldn’t eat so much junk food,” trying to stop someone’s weight-gain. For what purposes should university students attend classes? Is attending a class indispensable and essential for acquisition of knowledge and skills?

☆ Hints for points
♦Students should be required to attend classes because …
1. Students cannot decide whether they already know what is taught in class or not. Even if the content of the text is familiar, the professor would say something different and provide you with new information and insight.
2. If there is a course in which class attendance is meaningless, there should not be lesson schedules for the course first of all. As long as lessons exist, students are supposed to attend them.
3. attendance is the first step of the communication between professors and students. People tend to be fond of those whose faces they regularly see.

♦Students should not be required to attend classes because …
1. going to university is not mandatory but a privilege.
2. it is the professor who should decide when they should attend classes. Whether full attendance is necessary or not depends on the subject or the professor’s teaching style or plans.
3. it is waste of time if the content of the class is already familiar. Class contents are set for the average level and those who have higher knowledge but are taking the course because it is the prerequisite for the higher level course will learn little from the class.
4. study works in many ways. Very often, regular attendance, or activities on schedule, is an obstacle of deep thought or creative brain activities. Many people do their real study in their free time and doodle in class.
5. people tend to lose appetite for things they are forced to eat.

☆Paragraph development
A paragraph of the body of an essay often develops its main idea as follows:
Sample paragraph development
【Main Idea】 Class attendance requirement would hamper academic pursuit.
【Explanation】 Some students would have their learning style disrupted by the rigid rule that does not take secret of creativity into consideration.
【Detail / Example】 Many geniuses had irregular lifestyles.
【More Specific Detail / Example】 Bill Gates, for example, never minded getting up the next morning when his friends visited him in his dorm room and stayed there all night for discussion. Descartes, a great thinker and mathematician, needed to sleep 10 hours a day. Within a year after he started giving early-hour lessons, he died.
【Counterargument & Counter-counterargument】Some might ask why those who could attend high school classes suddenly cannot do the same at college. The truth is that if high school did not require students to attend classes, students would do better jobs. It is well known that many high school students study at night and sleep in class.
【Conclusion】Each student has his or her own learning style and university should respect it to make the most of the ability of its students.

Note 1) A counterargument is an expected rebuttal. While writing an essay, sometimes you ask yourself, “Well, but what about this case? My point is vulnerable to this case.” Then this “case” is the counterargument. Hitting a counterargument is a chance to grade up your essay because you have found an untied end of a rope (your logic). If you can tie it well, you can confirm your point, making your essay more persuasive. Thus, taking up a counterargument when necessary is important to get a higher score. You can deal with a counterargument in an appropriate part of a paragraph or use a whole paragraph to deal with it.

Note 2) Start with a short and simple sentence and elaborate on the idea in the next one: a simple main idea (topic sentence) and a longer explanation, and a simple example and a more specific example or two. Of course starting with the main idea with expressions for transition like “Another good thing about having a TV set in your room is that” or “Last but not the least” is a good idea and these expressions can sometimes be long and complicated, but the core of the main idea should be short and simple so that you can make the point clearly. Very often, we lose our point by being particular about details at the beginning of the paragraph, so, if you are not the type that can produce a perfect work just by typing what comes up to your mind, I would recommend making it simple first and focus on the details later. A main idea (topic sentence) is the pillar of the paragraph to which you attach other parts (details). Making it straight and firm would be safe in an academic test writing.

Now let’s practice paragraph development.
Choose one of the reasons you have come up with, make it the main idea, and develop it using the following form. As this is a sketch of a part of your real essay, use simple words and sentences for supporting details and focus on the logic and ideas.

Supersonic/Electronic Weapon 不特定多数による長期にわたる原因不明の嫌がらせ(6)

2012/03/25 (Sun) Went to bed around 2:00 Slept form 2:30-3:30 + 5:40-8:40 (1 + 3 hrs). + a 0.5-hr nap

2:22 1 e-shock to brain
3:33 1 e-shock + fit of let leg
3:40 1 fit of left leg (big)
3:48 a noise that sounded like somebody kicking the wall behind my bookshelf
3:50 1 –e-shock to brain (piercing)
4:01 1 fit of right middle finger placed under face
5:15 1 fit of left arm on my face
5:27 1 fit of left leg + the noise Goh
5:30 1 e-shock to brain
5:32 1 e-shock to brain + noise that sounded like somebody kicking the wall behind my bookshelf
5:35 1 e-chock to right ear (strong)
5:38 1 e-chock to right ear
I decided to get up and sat on my mattress, with attacks coming once in a while, but in 10 minutes I fell asleep.
8:40 noises in my head became loud and wavy
8:52 1 e-chock to brain

Went out around 12:30, sent a package to my mother, ate a sandwich at a coffee shop near the station, which did not hurry customers, and stayed at the fast food restaurant at the station till a little before 17:00. Bought food and got home a little after 17:00. I took a nap for 15 + 15 minutes at the restaurant. I woke up with my breathing sounds. There were no attacks.

The bathroom ventilator had no problem. It turned out that the noise I had thought from the ventilator was actually from the electric toothbrush which had fallen into a basin placed on the bathroom floor and whose switch was accidentally on probably when it fell. The basin had two shampoo bottles and a little water in it. The basin and the bathroom were working as a resonator.

Cats in my neighborhood seem to be ok now. One of them which had been so scared, having difficulty mewing, mewed today. It seemed that it was saying that the threat was gone. The one with flattened tale was gone. But the remaining two were bigger than they had been. If someone read my previous record and helped them, I thank you.

One thing I think I have to think more often and much harder is that the reason the harassment which is the title of this blog started reducing 6-7 years ago. It occurred suddenly one night. I remember a platform-full of people at Nippori station, waiting for a train bound for Chiba area, looking at their cell phones and reading something seriously, seemingly forgetting their usual interest of harassing me. And from that night on, the number of abusers started reducing. It went through this bizarre behavior of looking at me, many harassing me at the same time, and opining the cell phone, followed by change of attitude. If someone or some people who have done something to help me, thank you so much. I should have said this long ago.

Supersonic/Electronic Weapon 不特定多数による長期にわたる原因不明の嫌がらせ(6)

2012/03/24 Went to bed around :030. Slept from 1:30-6:40 (5 hrs).
Male voice that sounded like talking on the phone from around 1 hour before I went to bed stopped the moment I went to bed.
At least 15 attacks before I fell asleep.

When I was brushing my teeth after breakfast, a big motor sound went off the ventilator in the bathroom, continued for about 30 minutes, ant stopped. I made sure the noise was not from outside. No one was fixing anything on top of the building and neither was any noise heard around my building while the motor noise was heard in my room. --- A lighter noise started again later and is continuing (as of 11:49).

I’ll go to the fast food restaurant at my station after work and will probably stay till the closing time (22:00) today if nothing prevents me. I was going to do the same last Saturday, but around 21:20, I realized that, except for me, there was no one in the room but a male, not over 35, with wide forehead, dressed in tight black things, sitting in the back corner. He had been in the same seat a week before. He had been there when I arrived, as he had the week before, sat quietly all the time, reading something, but I felt something different, became concerned a little, and left. Similar situations had happened several times before. I had had stayed till the same hours, with only one male who happened to be staying there till late, and I had never felt anything was wrong. I could feel that they were minding their own business or minding their harassing business toward me. But the male exerted nothing and I think that scared me a little bit. When I was leaving, I turned around at the door, and he seemed to be smiling without looking at me.

The details and the rest of the record:
0:51 1 e-shock to brain (strong) + the noise Goh
0:57 1 e-shock to brain (weaker) + the noise Goh
1:01 1 e-shock to brain (weaker)
1:02 1 fit of right ankle
1:03 3 e-shocks to brain
1:04 1 e-shock to brain (strong)
1:061 e-shocks to head (weak and strong)
1:07 1 e-shock to brain (weak)
1:08 1 e-shock to brain (strong)
1:09 1 e-shock to brain 8strong) + fit of right ankle
1:14 1 e-shock to brain (rather strong)
1:27 1 e-shock to brain flashes in the back of eyes
1:21 2 e-shocks to brain (weak and strong)
1:28 1 e-shock to brain (strong) + the noise Goh
1:31 1 e-shock to brain (strong) + the noise Goh
1:32 1 e-shock to brain (long)
around 6:40 the noises in my head became loud and wavy suddenly
I gave up sleeping and tried to get up but kept falling asleep, but each time I started sleeping again, I was woken up by the following attacks.
6:42 1 e-shock to brain + the noise Goh
6:58 1 e-shock to brain + the noise Goh
7:31 1 e-shock to brain + the noise Goh
7:39 1 e-shock to brain + the noise Goh and I got up.

Had lessons from 13:30-19:00 at Yotsuya school. Left school around 19:20, stayed at the fast food restaurant from a little past 20:00 to 22:00, bought food, and got home a little past 22:00. A nice couple of their middle-ages stayed till the closing time other than me today. They were there last week, too, if I remember clearly. At that time, they left a little before I left.

50 meters before my apartment building, I noticed someone behind me. I turned around and a young man was about 10 meters behind me. I kept walking for a few meters but got afraid, remembering once a male having stood in less than 1 meter behind me while I was opening the gate, got in right after I got in, and made a strange sound. When the young man came a little behind me, I turned around the other way, went back toward the main street a few meters, and turned around again. The man went into the same building I live in. He did not look like a bad man. Rather, he wanted to reduce my anxiety by reaching the gate and opening it before me instead of following me, I guess. Sorry for my action. I just couldn’t help.

2012/03/23 (Fri) Went to bed around 1:00. Slept from 1:30-6:00 (4.5hrs).
1:22 1 e-shock to brain
1:23 1 e-shock to brain (strong) with an exploding sensation + the noise Goh
1:25 1 fit of left foot
1:27 1 bit of both knees
around 6:00 noises in my head became loud

Went out early afternoon, took a 25-minute brisk walk, took copies, reviewed class supplement at the fast food restaurant till around 17:30, bought food, and got home.

A male voice from the next room (202)which sounds like talking on the phone for more an hour after 23:00.

I usually do not put on foundation to go out in my neighborhood, but over the past two days, I put on some to go out for the protection against UV. A middle aged woman looked at my face and, for some mysterious reason, made an expression she would make if she saw me reaching for the food offered to a god. This started happening at this time of every year when I started wearing foundation on sunny days in my neighborhood. Sorry for changing my face color suddenly if it bothers you. I just do not like the sticky feeling of the substance but do not like to see spots on my face increase even more. Hence, dark face on cloudy days and white on sunny days.

2012/03/22 (Thu) Went to bed around 0:00. Slept form 0:30-6:00 (5.5 hrs).
0:29 1e-shock to head + fit of lower stomach
0:30 vibration to the right arm folded under head for around 5 seconds
0:32 1 e-shock to head + fit of upper left leg
around 6:00 the noises in my head became loud and wavy
between 0:00-7:00 sat up and read a book, and then became sleepy and laid myself
7:02 1 fit of stomach

Walked to the next station and bought cheap goods early afternoon.
Prepared for classes at the fast food shop from around 15:30-18:00, took copies for the Saturday TOEIC class―the pages are too many to copy without mistakes right before class at school and takes a long time―and got home around 19:00.

There are some women who come to the fast food shop for the same purpose I often go there for, to sleep. Our favorite spot is the same, in the narrow corner of the L-shaped counter. I learned the hours they use that spot and started not to sit there during the hours. Yesterday, I sat two seats away. I did not see any of them. Maybe they came and left while I was asleep. Today, as there were two men sitting in the back from where the whole body of the person sitting near the spot could be seen, I took the seat in the back corner although I knew they were not looking at me. One of the people I often see came, slept, and left. I stayed in the seat in the corner for a while because there were more men in the back. When a man sat two tables away from me on the same couch seat I was sitting on, I moved to the counter. Again, the man did not seem to be any harm, but I couldn’t stand staying there. Almost all males used to do harm when they sat near me before, and I still get nervous or get creeps in my back in the similar situation. These days I’m getting able to stay in the same seat once in a while even when a male sits on the same couch seat near me.

種の絶滅加速の原因は、環境の変化により新種ができやすくかつ育ちにくくなる点にもある。環境がすぐに元通りになれば元の種に戻る。
Jeffrey S. McKinnon: Right. So in the 20th century, we saw an influx of nutrients into freshwater aquatic systems and this resulted in Eutrophication, where algae numbers go up dramatically. What you end up with is a reduction in oxygen levels and that influences the white fish quite directly, in that some parts of the lake might become difficult to inhabit, but more significantly their eggs don't survive and hatch, because they're deposited on the sediment and that tends to be an area, which is really affected in terms of the oxygen. The remaining fish are obliged to spawn shallower and that is likely to result in more hybridization with other shallow spawning white fish and then in addition the Eutrophication affects the prey distributions so the food available changes dramatically as well.
Geoff Marsh: And so this is coined in the literature as reversal of speciation. It seems to be the absolute correlate of how species come into being.
Geoff Marsh: And they mentioned in the paper that in some of those lakes that Eutrophication problem that nutritious pollution has been eliminated or greatly reduced. Can we expect a re-speciation of the previously extinct species?
Jeffrey S. McKinnon: Yeah that's a really interesting question, isn't it? So some recent theoretical models suggest that if the disruption is brief, you might get something of a re-speciation and have something like the original species re-emerged. They're not going to be exactly the same, so it's going to be a good deal of genetic exchange. But if the niches re-emerge then you might expect something like that to happen. What the time frame would be is harder to say and exactly at which point it becomes impossible for that happen is also more difficult to say at this point.

19世紀半ばの天体爆発の反射光を観測して爆発原因を探る。
Armin Rest: Eta Carinae is a star that has a great eruption, is one of the most massive stars in our galaxy and in 1838, it had an eruption and that eruption brightened the star, so it got about two to three times brighter than it was before and that was actually observed by astronomers in South Africa.
Geoff Brumfiel: And what I think is really neat about this paper is even though this happened over a hundred years ago, you guys have been able to see some light from the explosion, right?
Armin Rest: Yes. So, the big thing was eruptions like that happen not very often. So in the Milky Way galaxy, in our galaxy, there are only two known in the last few hundred years and unfortunately at the time, there was no modern instrumentation yet, so nobody could take images or pictures of this eruption and so you don't know much about the eruption itself. And what we have been able to do is look at light, the most conflicted by dust and because it was conflicted, so it took a longer light path. It reached us 140 years after it actually reached the first time. So now we're actually able to look at this great eruption with modern instrumentation.
Geoff Brumfiel: So what you're saying is the light from the eruption went out and bounced off a cloud and came back to earth and the extra time it took to go out and be reflected was 140 years, so that you could still see an echo, you call it, of the original eruption.
Armin Rest: Because we can take a spectra, we kind of like get the fingerprint of this explosion, so we can figure out what was the temperature of the explosion and some of the other information. And one of the really surprising things that we found was that the explosion itself it is actually – or the eruption – is actually much cooler than we thought it will be. There have been other objects like this great eruption, observed in other galaxies and all of these other so called super novae impostors, they have much hotter temperatures and the great eruption of Eta Carinae was thought to be a prototype of this kind of eruptions and so now it turns out that the prototype is different than what it was a prototype for.
Geoff Brumfiel: So what do you think is actually going on with Eta Carinae?
Armin Rest: That's actually still debatable. Nobody really knows what happened. Eta Carinae is a binary star and we know that the companion star, which is much, much smaller than Eta Carinae has some kind of impact on Eta Carinae. It has a very elliptical orbit, and whenever it is close to Eta Carinae, it's so close that it actually disturbs Eta Carinae and one of the possibilities is that one of these encounters that happens every five years or so triggered something that caused this kind of outbursts. But what exactly happened, we don't know yet, but now we're actually able to get spectra from different times of this great eruption and so in a couple of years, I hope that we have solved this problem.

海に陸地ほど多くの種が存在しない原因は過去の大量絶滅らしい。
Geoff Marsh: And we're sticking with fish for our first highlight. Contrary to the popular saying, there are not plenty of fish in the sea, but why. Marine environments cover about 70% of the earth's surface, but contain only 15 to 25% of all estimated species. To find out why, a team from New York Stony Brook University studied ray-finned fish in marine and fresh water environments. This group represents 96% of all fish and half of all vertebrate species. Even though the marine environment is much larger and has more algae fuelling its food chain, they found that both environments had about the same number of species. They also discovered that all living ray-fins descend from a fresh water ancestor, suggesting that ancient extinctions have robbed the seas of their species. Nature liked this paper because it highlights the stark contrast in diversity between the land and the sea and it starts to explain why.

温暖化の結果、アメリカ合衆国の猛暑日の数が増加中。
Summer temperatures once considered exceptionally high have become more frequent across the United States in recent decades as a result of anthropogenic climate change. A US based team compared summer temperature extremes from 1950 to 1999 with simulations derived from 16 global climate models. Their models suggest that US summer temperatures will continue to rise as the century progresses. Even in the regions that have warmed relatively little so far, the chances of extreme temperatures will be at least 70% in any given year by the middle of this century.

ヒトの狂牛病の原因でイースト菌にもあるたんぱく質は自ら変形し自己複製するので、突然変異の鍵でもある。
Kerri Smith: Prion proteins are the Jekyll and Hyde of biology. They've long been associated with incurable degenerative diseases like Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease in humans and BSE in cattle, but they just might have a beneficial side too. A team led Susan Lindquist: In the popular imagination they are famous for causing a very bizarre and terrible human disease Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease and the basic idea was that you could have a protein that was one of your own brain's protein and it would change shape and when it did that it could self-perpetuate that shape and then that could get passed onto another individual and it will all start all over again and you'd actually have an infectious disease that was caused by a protein rather than being caused by an exogenous nucleic acid point vector.
Kerri Smith: But they're not all bad, are they. Prions in yeast at least might have a useful job to do.
Susan Lindquist: That's exactly what our work is trying to show that prions, these proteins that can change shape and then self-perpetuate that change and shape and get another protein of the same type to change shape. It was actually perfectly normal and reasonable biological mechanism for doing some interesting things and back when I first started thinking about this actually I remember thinking, gee! This is such a great mechanism, why isn't it used biologically?
Kerri Smith: Here in this paper then you're providing some new evidence for the idea that these shape-shifting proteins, these prion proteins have something to do with evolution, have an evolutionary function.
Susan Lindquist: Yeah, they have something to do, we believe, with providing a survival advantage in the wild; we call it a bet-hedging strategy. So, basically when the protein shifts into this prioned shape, it changes the function and this decoding function and so the cell starts to make some proteins slightly differently used to make them and that can have all kinds of new biological traits. And you know, a lot of the times that they do that is very good but quite a few of the time they can do amazing things with these changes, what they couldn't have done otherwise.
Kerri Smith: So, normally changes like this, you know, new biological traits arise because of mutations in genes, are you suggesting that prions can introduce changes too, and this isn't a totally new hypothesis, but why is it so controversial?
Kerri Smith: Now let me see if I have got this straight then. So there are a very small proportion of these prion proteins that might have this function, but they are basically acting as little valves that just let natural variation out.
Susan Lindquist: Yeah, and then once it happens, what's great about it is that it self-perpetuates so it actually becomes mechanism to inherit a new set of trait and then of course the whole things acts in reverse too, cells can lose the prionic state and they continue to grow and replicate. They can lose the prion.

アメリカ合衆国2013年度予算案の科学関連予算では疾病管理センター、環境保護庁、NASAへの割り当てが大幅にカットされたが全体的には思ったほど大ナタではないとのこと。
Ivan Semeniuk: I would say some areas that have been hit the hardest are places like the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. They had a fairly large hit; also the Environmental Protection Agency has been on a steady decline. There is an effort there to preserve sort of core programs but it's definitely losing money. NASA, NASA science in particular was hit hard this time around and you know one of the more visible manifestations of that is NASA has pulled out of the ExoMars project basically leaving ESA to go it alone , these would have been a pair of missions to Mars in 2016 and 2018 So NASA's basically concentrating now on getting the James Webb space telescope into orbit and planetary science is taking a back seat as a consequence.
Ivan Semeniuk: I think most researchers are saying it's better than it could have been, of course they would have preferred steadier gains but given the fiscal reality I think most agencies are feeling, they've done as well as they could.

2012/03/21 (Wed)
Went to bed around 1:00. Slept from 1:00-3:30 + 6:00-8:00 (2.5 + 2 hrs), prevented from going back to sleep again.

Did house work and revised class supplements. I’m going out to take copies of some of the marked mock test essays and prepare for work, and if possible to supplement sleep, at the fast food restaurant.

Right when I took out from the closet a new long sleeved T-shirt with small red flower patterns which is the only one I have that is good for a 25-minute brisk walk in today’s weather, a sunny and warm early spring day, the phone rang. It was NTT asking about my apartment company’s phone number to make sure it can install fiber optic cables to change my internet contract into the fastest one. I’m going out in ten minutes or so.

The details and the rest of the record:
3:30 the noises in my head became loud and wavy and I woke up.
4:02 1 fit of left leg (strong)
4:07 1 fit of left shoulder
4:28 unnatural cough of a middle-aged male near my building
4:43 1 fit of my left ring finger placed under face (I was sitting leaning forward)
5:05 1 e-shock to my brain
5:40 1 fit of butt
7:56 ticklish feeling like insects running around mouth
8:00 1 fit of a muscle on the face line in front of the right ear
8:06 woke up with my own snore
8:211 fit of left leg
8:38 a noise that sounded like somebody open a door and go out in the next room right behind my bookshelf which is far from the front door of both rooms
8:23 1 fit of left thumb placed under face

Did walking for 25 minutes, stayed at the fast food restaurant from around 15:40 to 17:20, took copies, and got home around 18:00. Took a nap for about 40 minutes. Woke up with several e-shocks and fits, the last of which was the fit of the muscles of my left lower leg, which felt like muscles were plucked by a steel stick, similar one I had on the back of my head when I woke up from the nap at the restaurant yesterday.

After taking a shower, I called home. My mother feels better. She took a bath today. She is enjoying seasonal foods sent from her maiden home and relatives. She said she likes the color of the pajamas I gave her and that took a picture in it. Her mind became slightly vague, enough to be free from the fear I think and hope, several days before she left the hospital.

2012/03/20 (Tue) Went to bed around 1:00. Slept from 1:00-5:30. (4.5 hrs).
Around 5:00 something hit the wall of the next room (202) and I woke up.
6:13 noises in my head became loud and wavy and prevented me from going to sleep again.
6:33 1 e-shock to head (rather strong)
6:49 2 fits of left thumb placed under head
6:51 1 fit of left wrist placed under bust
6:57 1 e-shock to brain + 1 fit of right leg accompanied by the noise Goh
7:02 1 fit of left thumb placed under shoulder of mine lying face down

Too sleepy to work and went to the fast food restaurant, on my way buying a file and a clipboard for a Saturday TOEIC class that I realized were unnecessary later, around 11:00 and took a nap for 30 minutes. A few e-shocks woke me up. I stayed there till early afternoon, bought food, took copies, took a round to see cats, and got home around 16:00.

While marking essays, I became so sleepy again that I started nodding and decided to take a nap again. Till I fell asleep, e-shocks came incessantly. I think I slept for 5-10 minutes and woke up with the noises in my head which became loud and wavy suddenly. I kept lying with my eyes closed and experienced e-shocks and blinking flashes in my eyes.

Cats in my neighborhood keep disappearing. It seems that they go in the order of their prettiness. At least 5 have gone during this winter, and at least 3 of them had had one of their eyes injured, probably punctured, shortly before they disappeared. The ones left are scared. I saw two of them today. One of them had had its tail flattened.

0:51 1 e-shock to brain (strong9 whose quick surge I felt come from the next room 202.
I think I woke up in the morning with a fit of my finger but not sure.

Have been hearing a loud male voice talking in the next room for about an hour. Now it’s 15:37. I’m leaving a little later for a class in Shibuya.

Hope everything is going well for everyone…

The rest of the record: Left home around 16:00, arrived at Shibuya station around 17:00, stayed at a book store near my school studying TOEIC books till a little past 18:00. Class finished around 20:50, left the school around 20:55, arrived at my station at 2-:50, though of staying at the fast food restaurant, but, since it was too late, gave up, bought food, and got home a little past 22:00.

It was the second week that I use the line in later hours. There were more harassing people than usual, but the difference was not so big as it used to be. On my way back, there was a male in his late 50s or 60’s sitting on the other side of my seat who kept looking into my eyes with an evil smile while taking notes contentedly, I kept my dignity and did not swear, although I said, “気持ち悪い目つき sickening stare, “ when I walked past him to get off to make it even by letting others know that he had been doing something dirty.

I would probably stop saying such things, too. I do not want people who have been nice to me to be blamed for my bad behavior despite the fact that they have nothing to do with it.

Class Supplement,TOEFL Essay, Why go to college?

☆Writing Topic
There are many different reasons to attend a college or university. What do you think are some of the main reasons so many people are interested in attending college or university? Include specific reasons and details in your response.

☆Let’s think
The first sentence of the writing topic says that people go to college for “many different reasons.” It is probably true. Some might go to a higher school so that they can study the subject they are really interested in, while others might go to college just because they feel it is better for them to do so although they are not so sure why, and still others may intend to make friends with as many interesting people as possible during their college years.

The question requires you to name some of the MAIN reasons why people think of going to college. Minor reasons such as personal reasons cannot be included in your points.

☆Ideas and expressions
WHY GO TO UNIVERSITY
Taken from http://www.upforitclub.org.uk/whataboutuniversity/whatwherewhyhow/whygotouniversity/
1. INDEPENDENCE: You could get the chance to live away from home during term time and won't have somebody telling you to tidy your room and do your homework. It's a great way of finding your feet before you move out completely.

2. OPPORTUNITIES: You get to meet people from all over the world who are interested in the same subject as you. You can join clubs and societies for almost every interest you can think of.

3. COURSES AND CHOICES: If you are thinking about university, then hopefully you have a course in mind that you may like to study. If you enjoy the subject and find it interesting, university allows you to explore and expand your knowledge for three years, normally with the use of fantastic facilities and experts in that subject who teach you.

4. SOCIAL LIFE: You get to socialize and take advantage of some fantastic facilities right on your doorstep! Never again will entertainment be so cheap and you'll meet people who might possibly end up being your friends for life.

5. JOBS: Graduates are much more likely to get a job, particularly at a 'professional' level and when they are working, graduates earn about a third more money than non-graduates. If you want to work in certain areas like medicine, teaching or law, you'll need a degree in the subject before you start.

☆One-paragraph essay = the framework of the full essay
Now let’s write a one-paragraph essay before writing a full essay. You could use each sentence as the main idea (topic sentence) of each paragraph of your full essay.
Sample one-paragraph essay:
【Main Idea】 I think people think of going to college to become a better adult, for academic pursuit, and for their future careers.
【Reason 1】Spending another four years at school is attractive for many people who feel that they need some more years to be ready for adult life.
【Reason 2】 Pure interest in the subject may well be another reason.
【Reason 3】 People go to college to get a good job.
【Conclusion】Many people are interested in going to college because they want to become a well-rounded, intelligent person equipped with college diploma.

Your one-paragraph essay:
【Main Idea】

【Reason 1】

【Reason 2】

【Reason 3】

【Conclusion】

☆Paragraph development
A paragraph of the body of an essay often develops its main idea as follows:
【Main Idea】People go to college to get a good job.
【Explanation】They think having a college degree is an advantage in the job market.
【Detail / Example】 Most good jobs require at least a Bachelor’s degree.
【More Specific Detail / Example】If you take a look at classified ads, you will find that to apply for almost all the high-paying or professional jobs you need to have a college degree or graduate degree in addition to other qualifications such as experience and skills.
【Counterargument & Counter-counterargument】It is true that having an undergraduate degree is not so much an advantage in getting a job as before, since most people go to college nowadays. Also, it is well-known that one’s academic background is hardly a hiring priority for human resources managers. However, it is obvious that a candidate with a college diploma has more chances to get a job than a person without one if all the other conditions are the same.
【Conclusion】 It is natural to think that it is safe to get a college degree before becoming independent and start work.

☑Let’s deal with counterarguments
A counterargument is a bonus-point icon in an essay writing game. If you venture to take it up and deal with it successfully, your essay will jump up to the upper level and you will be awarded with a good score. On the other hand, if you fail to be aware of an inevitable counterargument, your essay will become vulnerable to the attack on it. Your raters may regard the neglected counterargument as a flaw in logic. Think of the debate for which you had not prepared carefully. Although you do not have to demonstrate how smart you are, as TOFFL essay writing is an English test, you may well show that you can think and write objectively in English.

Your test paragraph development
Now let’s practice paragraph development. Choose one of the reasons you have come up with, make it the main idea, and develop it using the following form. As this is a tentative part of your real essay, use simple words and sentences and focus on the logic and ideas.

【Main Idea】

【Explanation】

【Detail / Example】

【More Specific Detail / Example】

【Counterargument & Counter-counterargument】

【Conclusion】

スミスソニアン博物館はグローバル化により失われる言語・文化を収集・保存中。
Cristian Samper: So, it's the real thing, it's not just the information. It is in many ways a 21st century museum catching up with genomics and the third initiative that we're focusing on is something called recovering voices. As you know, one of the major crises that we're facing right now other than biodiversity crisis is the lost culture and diversity because of globalization. So, it's estimated that of the 7000 or so languages that are spoken in the planet, probably 80% will disappear by the end of century and the challenge is not just losing the language but everything that goes into that language and it's all that knowledge that has been accumulated over thousands of years in many cases. So, we feel that as a museum we have a role to play in helping document those languages but also using those to support research and to support some of the communities.

地殻変動により各大陸がつながってできる次の巨大大陸をアムネシアと呼ぶ。北に寄るらしい。
Geoff Marsh: For this next story we're going to Amasia, not really.
Kerri Smith: Amasia is the name of the next predicted supercontinent, an amalgam of all the current continents all squished together. The last one of these was Pangaea about 300 million years ago. The Saga of the super continent's impacts for life on earth, giant reptiles, for example would have had the whole of Pangaea to roam, modern day species are separated by oceans and super continent clashing and drifting could alter the climate too. Amasia is still 50 to 200 million years away and it'll come about when the Americas and Asia bump into each other but where will it form, Ross Mitchell and his colleagues at Yale University have developed a model to tell us. Here's Ross. Nature 482, 208–211 (09 February 2012)
Ross Mitchell: According to the orthoversion model we would predict that the present day Arctic Ocean and Caribbean seas would probably be the first ones to close, if the Caribbean and the Arctic are able to vanish first you would fuse the Americas together, the north and South Americas, those would mutually migrate northward leading to collision with Europe and Asia more or less at the present day North Pole. Australia would also according to our model most likely continue its northward motion and snuggle up next to India.
Kerri Smith: And Ross you know will be neighbours in the new world?
Ross Mitchell: Oh, that's the funny thing about super continent that even though it's far away off it is interesting to think that in the past super continents we were neighbours and in the future it's also a possibility.

天然ガスは採掘時に漏れるメタンにより温暖化を助長する可能性がある。
Geoff Marsh: Now first story on your list is the natural gas isn't it clean as it supposed to be?
Richard Van Noorden: Right, natural gas which is methane is supposed to be cleaner burning than coal in that there is fewer greenhouse gas emissions when you burn in a power plant but the worry is that when you're extracting the natural gas from the ground originally what about if some methane, some nature gas leaks out as you're doing that and goes into the atmosphere. Well, methane is 25 times more efficient than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere, maybe the natural gas isn't as clean as you think when it comes to climate emissions. Now this week our top story is it appears we've got the first hard evidence to suggest that natural gas might not be much better than coal.
Geoff Marsh: Now is this just a sort of technical worry, could we overcome this by using different extraction methods?
Richard Van Noorden: The problem is it is feasible to capture and store gases that are being vented as this natural gas is being extracted but unfortunately industries says the measures are very costly to adopt and the USA Environmental Protection Agency is trying to regulate emissions from gas field and really trying to clean up this sector and that will mean that natural gas becomes more expensive and therefore less attractive for companies to move to. So it is possible to do when environmental groups are pushing the EPA to strengthen pollution controls. But on the other hand, the industries pushing to relax these requirements because it says they're costly and burdensome.

インドネシアで化石が発見されホビットとあだ名の付いた小さなヒトに似た生き物は、ヒトが病気によって小さくなったものではないことが判明した。
Corie Lok: The discovery of an ancient human-like dwarf species made big headlines around the world in 2004. The little creatures even earned the nickname hobbits. The finding kicked off a fierce debate over whether the hobbits were a new hominid species or just modern humans suffering from a growth stunting disease called cretinism. Peter Brand at the University of New England in Australia analyzed the hobbit remains looking at traits such as brain mass and skeletal proportions. He compared these traits with those of people with cretinism and found no signs in the hobbits of delayed growth that are normally linked to the disorder. This supports the idea that the hobbits were indeed a separate species. This paper published in the Journal of Human Evolution was interesting to us in Nature because it goes a long way to settling the debate, but that won't resolve it completely. Nature 482, 135 (09 February 2012)Switching our focus to cancer, here's a paper that raises the possibility of long-term effects of chemotherapeutic drugs. Experiments in mice show that three common cancer drugs cause DNA mutations in not just the treated mice but also in their offspring. Mutations in a specific region of the genome were twice as common in the offspring of treated males, than they were in either parent. The researchers from the University of Leicester in the UK suggest that the drugs cause destabilization in the mouse genome that lasts long after the mice were exposed to the drugs. We flagged up this paper because transgenerational effects of cancer drugs are entreating, even if they're not yet fully explained. The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Nature 482, 134–135 (09 February 2012)

痰が固まる奇病の遺伝子治療薬は開発費に対し患者数が少ないため非常に高価になる。
Richard Van Noorden: Yes, so back in 1989 researchers said that they've discovered the cause of cystic fibrosis. It's a mutation in a key protein channel, that channel's chloride ions from the inside of a lung cell to the outside keeping mucus thin and watery and basically keeping it fluid now when that channel that protein channel goes wrong and the chloride ions aren't transported the mucus becomes thick and accumulates and people with cystic fibrosis cough up this mucus and it also leads the way to bacterial infection. So back in 1989 we discovered the secret and we'd found that what's going wrong now fast forward to 2012 and we know there are more than 1500 different mutation in this protein, so very complicated and we have just approved the first drug to kind of tackle one of these problems and it's called Kalydeco made by Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Geoff Marsh: So nearly 300,000 dollars a year and how many people are realistically going to be able to afford this treatment?
Richard Van Noorden: Exactly if we all take those 1200 maybe only a handful can actually pay for that themselves, it's going to come down to insurance companies coming up with creative ways to help people pay for this and this really is speaking for one of the main problems of, you know, the new era in drug discovery, you find a specific mutation that helps a very small specific number of people, it's going to be very, very expensive, because the drug company in this case Vertex wants to recoup the money that they put in to get to this treatment I remember it's taken more than 20 years. On the plus side of course these patients won't be paying for the generalized treatments that didn't really target the cause of their problem which has helped to sweep away the mucus, so they won't be wasting money on treatments that don't help very much.

南極の氷底湖ボストークを覆う氷に穴をあけて中を調べる計画の穴あけほぼ終了。
Richard Van Noorden: I am happy to say this is literally a breakthrough. These are the Russians drilling down 3750 metres through the Antarctic ice sheet down to Lake Vostok which is laying there undisturbed for millions and millions of years could be harbouring prehistoric life forms contains climate records of what Antarctica's life before the ice caps arrived. It's very, very exciting. Now I've got to tell listeners that we've just spoken to the Director of the Russian Antarctic Program, who has just flown back from the Antarctic and he says to us as I speak that they cannot yet be confirmed that they've broken through that pretty sure and that's two people at the bore hole tracking the monitoring data and perhaps by the time you listen to this it will all be confirmed.
Geoff Marsh: Now why is not just obvious that they've broken through to a lake?
Richard Van Noorden: Well, because the bore hole is 3750 metres down, they can't actually just look and just talk, they've got to use sensors to collect data about, you know, what is the surface down there like. Now the question really everyone was wondering about as if they broke through whether they're going to contaminate the water they're supposed to be sampling so what they're actually doing is letting the whole thing refreeze, whether or not they confirm they have been broken through, the drilling has now stopped. The Antarctic summer operations are closing and they'll go back in December and then they'll be having very thin sheets of ice that will have reformed, they will drill through again and then they will start to the analysis, so though they probably broken through right now we won't really hear anything more exciting from the lake until December.
Geoff Marsh: When we do start to hear back from them what's been the most fanciful ideas about what might be lurking down there?
Richard Van Noorden: Well, I will just quickly pass over the possibility that the Nazis might have put U-boats there, which is a popular conspiracy theory, the more interesting scientific questions is that ill we find life forms that somehow existed there prehistoric apparently out of range of the sun, what are they going to look like, if we don't find life forms are we going to find trapped gas bubbles or analyze the water to find out what the climate was like way back before the ice caps arrived, those of the kinds of exciting research questions that we're looking at.

第二次世界大戦中、米政府認可のもとでグァテマラの弱者に対して性病を意図的に感染させる等の非人道的研究がなされた。主に規制の緩い途上国で行われている現代の医療研究開発にも通じる問題。
Matthew Walter: The people who are involved in this experiment, you know, prisoners, orphans, people who were going to a mental institution these are what we would call vulnerable populations and so as you can imagine most of these people have lived their lives in poverty, the person who we discuss in this story, his name is Federico Ramos, he is 87 years old now and has lived his life with symptoms of venereal disease ever since he left military service over 65 years ago.
Geoff Marsh: Needless to say more than a thousand of these people were infected. How was this justified at that time?
Matthew Walter: There was great concern about the number of soldiers who were contracting venereal diseases and the cost that the military was bearing from having soldiers unable to serve because they were infected. The scientist who designed and ran the study his name was Dr. John Cutler. The government reports on this study make it pretty clear that he wasn't always conducting good science. It was clear that he would sometimes do things out of sequence or possibly cut corners and in the end, none of the studies were ever published or submitted for peer review.
Geoff Marsh: Now these experiments came to light in 2010 and President Obama issued a formal apology and set up an investigation by ethics committee, what did they find out, was this Cutler was here alone rogue scientist?
Matthew Walter: Yeah, what's interesting about the case is it was sort of hidden in plain sight; it was not a secret study. This was an experiment that it received approval from the top officials in the US Public Health System. The surgeon general signed off on it. It received government funding and it was even clear that public health officials in Guatemala knew about and cooperated in the study. So, they clearly believed that the science was important enough. Clearly they thought there were things they could do in Guatemala that they couldn't in United States.
Geoff Marsh: Does it have any relevance to practices today?
Matthew Walter: It does in the sense that this experiment in an under-developed country that really was just building up its Public Health infrastructure. The country was unequipped to enforce even its rule and that's an interesting thing to note, because lots of researches done today in emerging market countries were there's uneven enforcement of regulation or maybe regulation isn't even in place and you know there's good reason to do experiments abroad that reduces costs and that you know allows scientists to conduct their research but it is important to think about these issues.

2012/03/15 (Thu) Went to bed around 0:00. Slept from 0:00-7:00 (Straight 7 hrs!).
0:10 1 e-shock to head
7:00 noises in my head loud
still sleepy and continued to sleep but gave up due to the attacks as follows:
7:28 1 fit of left thumb placed under head (I was lying on mattress)
7:30 1 fit of left shoulder
7:42 1 fit of left hand supporting my head ( I was half sitting)
7:50 1 fit of left hand under my face
7:53 1 fit of lower right leg

About 15 minutes after I got up, after I brushed my teeth, somebody left the next room (202) and I saw the same young woman I saw the day before yesterday going out of the gate of the premises.

There are four or five umbrellas, black and transparent, hanging in front of the next room near the door, which stands out because none of the other rooms of this apartment building, at least out of seven on the second floor, has any umbrellas left outside. Also, a black folding umbrella with small pink ribbon patterns had been hanging with them till recently for a few months.

Though I should be down considering my mother’s condition, because of the straight 7-hour sleep which I had not had for a very long time, I felt good and looked better today. I felt as if I had got out of a solitary cell. Although the noises in my head were loud even after I got up and till I left home, I was not sleepy and did not have the feeling of after-concussion.

I marked essays taking advantage of the sunny day till 15:30, and left home. I took a walk along the river for 25 minutes for health and went to the fast food restaurant. Stayed there till 18:30, bought food, and got home a little before 19:00.

2012/03/14 (Wed) Went to bed around 1:30. Slept from 2:00-5:30 (3.5 hrs).
5:59 noises in my head loud and wavy
6:17 1 e-shock to head
7:06 1 e-shock to head
7:07 1 e-shock to head
7:11 1 fit of upper body (strong)
7:12 1 fit of left ankle (strong)
7:13 1 unnatural cough of an old male
7:19 1 e-shock to brain
7:20 1 e-shock to brain (stronger)
7:22 1 fit of upper left mouth
7:22 1 fit of left shoulder
7:23 1 fit of left thumb
7:25 1 e-shock to brain
7:26 1 e-shock to brain (stronger)
I was wondering whether I should get up when somebody opened curtains in the next room (202).
7:31 1 e-shock + 1 fit of left thumb
Around 7:35 somebody seemed to leave the next room (202). I heard somebody close the door and running down the stairs. When I looked out, I saw a dark figure walking fast 50 meters away. I couldn’t tell whether it was a male or female. Did not seem to be the same woman I saw yesterday.
7:52 1 fit of upper legs
7:59 1 e-shock of left brain
8:00 I gave up trying to sleep again and opened the curtain closest to my bedding when a noise of somebody moving in the next room was heard.

Went to the fast food restaurant and stayed there from around 13:00 to 19:30, bought food, and came home around 19:49. At the restaurant, I took a nap for 30 minutes.

My father called around 22:00. I learned how my mother is doing after she came back home on Monday. It became clear recently that she is terminally ill, the reason why I went to Osaka suddenly. Phone calls and visits may increase from now on.

2012/03/13 (Tue) Went to bed around 0:50. Slept from 2:00-6:30 (4.5 hrs).
0:52 1 e-shock to head ; jaw shut with a clashing noise
6:37 noises in my head became loud and wavy + the game/car-like noise
(got up a took cold medicine)
7:43 1 e-shock and fit of my head (beam-like sensation with my head sifting side to side)
7:50 1 fit of my right foot
7:56 1 fit of my right arm placed under my head
7:57 1 fit of my brain
8:00 1 fit of my left hand placed under futon
8:04 1 fit of my brain
8:14 1 fit of my left hand placed under my body
8:38 Right after I gave up sleeping because of the attacks and went to the bathroom, somebody left the next room (202). I looked out of the window and waited for the person come out of the front gate. A young woman with reddish brown hair tied high in the back in a dark coat with fur around the neck and long boots who was wearing a musk came out, put the garbage in the bin, and left. I thought of sleeping again, but felt that the attacker was still in the next room, decided to stay awake.

Had lessons at Omiya from 17:30-21:10. Because Takasaki-line was delayed, I left Omiya at 21:40 and got home around a little past 22:30.

Note: Ate lunch at Lotteria in Omiya. The place was as nice as that of my station. :)

Addition to the rest of the record on 2012/03/11
Spent a day at a hospital in Osaka from around 13:00 -19:15* and came back to Shinagawa around 23:15, got lost for five minutes, forwent the second from the last train at Sengakuji to call my family, came back to my station a little past 0:00, paid the rest of the fare I did not pay when I hurriedly took the train at Shinagawa, bought food, and got home around 0:15.
(added on 2012/03/13) *Although I had made sure that I could stay longer, making sure the last train was at 21:20, my mother said that I should not go home late, so I left about 30 minutes before the end of the visiting hours of the hospital.

Note: There was no one who harassed me in Osaka. I do not know whether it was because there are only a few people who harass me now anywhere or it was because Osaka people are nicer. Though I noticed many (probably more accurately, most) people I do not know seem to recognize me.

I was surprised that there was no woman who visits me to show off her offspring to me for a reason I do not know-this still happens at least once whenever I go out in Tokyo. I noticed this when a young woman with a baby in her arm rushed past me without looking at me, though I was within her sight. I tested with a couple of families by approaching them but none reacted aggressively or viciously to me. They naturally just viewed me as one of their passers-by.

(added on 2012/03/12) On my way from Shin-Osaka to the hospital, forgetting it’s cheaper to take the loop line to the private railway, I took the subway from Shin-Osaka in accordance with the internet information, the quickest way. I wanted to avoid having lunch only with my father, who habitually peeked my bath and once in a while touched my bust and leg in my college days, always makes me feel uncomfortable to dine with him, and rushed toward my body and was stopped by one of my sisters-this had never happened before-as I escaped when I was taking care of my mother while massaging her leg today. I had told him to call him when I arrived at Shin-Osaka, but I wanted to finish a quick meal before I arrive at the hospital station. I looked for a noodle stand in the stations but there was none or none of them was open, probably because it was Sunday. Near the Keihan-line entrance in Yodoyabashi station, I called my father and was asked repeatedly in a threatening way where I was. I hang up the phone and a few minutes later called again, which he did not answer, and left a message telling where I was and that I was taking the train to the hospital station. I bought some pastry and drink at a stand in Yodoyabashi and had them on the train, which had few people.

On the train on my way home, a man, who got on at Shin-Osaka and got off somewhere between, looked into my eye with evil smile and started reading his phone and a tall and slim man, who got on at Maibara or Nagoya and was still on when I got off at Shinagawa, took the next seat without asking if it was occupied and acted in a way I found somewhat unnatural although he was not a threat at all-(added on 2012/03/13)he kept using his smart phone or electric reader and a tablet never bothering me- and seemed nice when I got out of the seats. –( added on 21012/03/12) In retrospect, I am thankful to him because I was able to avoid having an uncomfortable company after a young woman (nice person) got off.

Because of two consecutive days of deprived sleep, (3 in total and 2 hrs.), I tried to sleep on both ways. One my way to Osaka, a shock which I could not tell was the e-shock or a twitch of nerves in my head occurred, whichever it was, it was unusual anyway. On my way back, I slept 20 minutes or so during the last one hour of the ride. One hour before that, I got clearly the same e-shock once when I was about to sleep but conscious. A young man with a blue and white striped scarf and glasses, middle height or short and middle weight, short hair, was sitting behind me, and when I looked back, he was looking at me with a slight smile.

(added on 2012/03/12 and 13) I saw some of the nice people I see in Tokyo in Osaka and Nagoya, too. They were not the same people, but the same kind of people. They seemed to recognize me but left me alone, even when I was doing stupid and/or unexplainable things*. They were gentle and warm. I could feel good vibes from them. Wishing you all health and good luck! :)

*(added on 2012/03/13) and probably making them wonder what in the world I was up to. For example, while I was on the subway Midosuji-line between Shin-Osaka and Yodoyabashi, instead of taking the loop-line as most visitors do, people who got on the train at Umeda or Higashi-Umeda looked worried half looking at me on the platform before coming into the train, to which I started wondering why there are so many nice but worried people here. I also remember I passed some nice-looking people worriedly, one or two angrily, staring at me from the time I started looking for the way to the subway (Midosuji line) in Shin-Osaka station till I get into the private railway (Keihan line).

Based on the facts I have written above and some other facts that I have reserved to write about, I think, though I am reluctant to, it can be concluded that there are some “nice” people among the truly nice people I see in the street, which I have started feeling a few months ago. Take care, truly nice people, though I know you can handle it! :)

In the early afternoon, an NTT person came to see my slow ADSL and found no problem. He adjusted settings to stabilize the speed for the remote area.
Yesterday, I inquired NTT again about my sluggish downloading. They made sure that the speed between the station and my place was slow then and decided to send a person to see what is wrong like the last time. Although downloading was slow this morning, after noon, it became fast enough just like the last time. I had taken a video of downloading a YouTube video with many buffering, which was not the slowest. The NTT person admitted it was slow but did not seem to think the speed was seriously slow.

When the NTT person left, I said thank you but was still skeptical. Like the last time, the speed might become slow tomorrow, I was thinking. I’m sorry! Now, I’m starting to believe the problem has been fixed. Though partly I suspect my neighbor is doing something, like sneaking into my PC, meddling with settings, and tomorrow, the speed will be slow again.

After the NTT person left, I watched a Frontline video on Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster, walked to the next station to withdraw money, went to the area near my station, ate a sandwich at another coffee shop, stayed there for 30 minutes, and prepared for classes at the fast food shop in the station for a few hours, and came home a little before 20:00.

Eating a sandwich at a coffee shop, I noticed three old men were looking at me with dirty smiles. I was in the back of the room from where almost everyone at tables could be seen. Several month ago, this would have made me move to a different seat or leave, but I told myself something (secret so that I could use this again) and I did not get upset. I forgot them and watched other people while eating. When I finished my sandwich, I noticed the three old men dropped the dirty smile, looking disappointed. This reminded me that the stares of such men and dirty expressions would often cause me to make mistakes like dropping a spoon or spilling coffee, which seemed to make them all the happier. They might have been expecting me to make such mistakes. They looked like three sullen cats. Honestly, I was happy to see my abusers unhappy and showed it to them. (I know this mentality is not praised and I am disgusted of myself, but I think that returning the stress to those who imposed it on you is better than to bully the weaker than you. “Get even, (やられたら、やりかえせ)” said a teacher of social studies (interestingly, a middle-aged male teacher) of one of the junior highs I went to.) Seeing the shop doesn’t allow customers to stay long and the man next to me turning his ankle and making me feel sick, I decided to leave and was about to get up when one of the old men made an action to leave. (That kind of men would often rush to my back when I was returning my tray.)Again, I was not affected and the man looked disappointed again. Anyway, their dirty smile was not as dirty as before. I’m using the word dirty not evil, which I usually and accurately use to describe the smile of my abusers. The difference is equivalent to that between pollen and radiation. I was and am glad from the bottom my heart that I do not cause the radioactive reactions in men anymore.

It is not clear but I might have a private lesson on either 14th ( ? -16:00) or 21st (between 13:00-16:00).

I’m going to visit my mother at a hospital in the suburban area of Osaka on Sunday.

Class Supplement, TOEFL Essay, A traditional house in the countryside or a modern apartment in a city?

Writing Topic
What sort of setting would you like for your home, a traditional house in the county or an urban apartment building built in a modern style? Use specific reasons and details to support your choice.

☆Let’s think
Some questions make you wonder which planet you are on now. How many people actually want to live in either of these types of setting? A really traditional house in the country which still remains now in this industrialized world is an old farm house, often without electricity, in a remote area suffering from depopulation, and people who live in such places are elderly people whose children have left them to work in cities. Also, as most population of the world concentrate in urban areas, if you want to live in a city and still want to live in a decent apartment which can be described as modern, you have to work 25 hours a day and have little time to enjoy to your heart’s content the latest movies or exhibitions that are showing next door unless you are born with a silver spoon in your mouth. Neither can be a romantic, which-lifestyle-would-you-prefer setting.

Of course, these are the negative images of the two settings given in this writing topic. Now let’s see what kind of positive images we are supposed to develop from them. They are two ultimate images of ideal homes. Would you like to have a relaxed life close to nature or would you like to spend every day in an atmosphere that stimulates all of your senses? Which do you prioritize in your life, nature or civilization? Which would you prefer, an idyllic setting or urban setting?

Note: This question starts with the word “What,” not “Which.” You do not exactly have to choose either of these diagonally opposite types of places to live. Write, “Honestly, I would like to live in a high-tech mansion in a resort,” the mixture of both. However, since all kinds of settings can be more or less grouped into either of the two, this writing topic can be dealt with as a choice question. Thus, writing about both settings would be a good idea.

☆Hint for points
Brainstorm characteristics of each choice, juxtaposing them point to point.

Traditional house in the country
environment: full of nature, good for the health
lifestyle: relaxing, slow, monotonous
convenience: low prices, life based on automobile transportation, safer
relationship: intimate, warm, carefree, relaxed, down-to-earth, conservative
people: same kind of people, many relatives

Modern apartment in a city
environment: constantly changing, noisy, polluted
lifestyle: relaxing, slow, monotonous exciting, fast-paced
convenience: safer many means of transportation
varieties of shops, restaurants
many hospitals, schools, cultural facilities
relationship: dry, individualistic
people: people with many different backgrounds, interesting, open-minded, freer, progressive

☆Two ways of dealing with opposite ideas (Two types of body structures for a choice question)
Choose either of the following two ways of dealing with opposite ideas, and make a framework of the body of your full essay. It is one idea of efficiency to write the framework of the body and develop it first, and then add the introduction and the conclusion.

♦Comparing points
You write about both ideas comparing and contrasting them point to point.
e.g.
Point 1: Comparison of the environment, convenience, and security
Point 2: Comparison of the leisure activities
Your preference (choice)

♦Developing images of each choice
You write about each idea separately.
e.g.
About living in a traditional house in the county
About living in an urban apartment building built in a modern style
Your preference (choice)

The framework of the body of your full essay

Around 8:32, a big fit of my left leg and butt.
I don’t remember whether there were no attacks or no recording. I often concentrate of sleeping and forgo taking notes. I have a feeling that last night was the same.

Went to the tax office to hand in the tax return application, prepared for classes at the fast food restaurant for a few hours, bought food, and came home around 18:00.

When I looked up at the white wall in the restaurant, I saw translucent geometric patterns that I see when attacked or when I woke up after attacked blinking and changing shape in sync with the blinks.

On my way home, I took a round to see cats in my neighborhood, but I gave up because some male was standing near the place and it was getting dark. I took a short cut, going through some apartment building property, and got home from the other side.

Took a bath and cooked. It’s now a little past 20:00. I’ll make some teaching materials and go to bed.

Class Supplement, TOEFL Essay, A very good/bad advertisement

Writing Topic
Advertising is a constant presence in our lives. Some advertisements are enjoyable and effective, but others are annoying. Choose an advertisement you think either very good or very bad, and explain why you either like or dislike this particular advertisement. Include specific details to explain your response.

☆Let’s think
To answer this question is rather easy. Everyone has an experience of being impressed or disgusted by an ad. The difficult part might be how you describe and explain. You have to tell yourself that the reader might not know the ad you are writing about, so you have to describe it in detail. Also, you have to explain the reason why you think it is good/bad. Sense is personal, and it requires careful explanation, or you will fail to convey to the reader the excitement you got from the ad.

☆Ideas and Expressions
Choose one of the following ads you like/dislike, and explain why.

A. Color-blind world

B. Love your enemy

C. Quit smoking!

D. Disease prevention (hepatitis B)

E. Donation

F. Try it on!

G. Got a car for Christmas

H. Green tea

I. Wanna coffee?

J. Vegetarian restaurant

☆Essay for ideas and expressions
Walking down a street in downtown Tokyo, I looked up and forgot where I was for a second due to an advertisement. It had a simplest design. I thought it was very good because it was eye-catching, stimulating, and practical.

The advertisement that caught my eye was a bulletin board of the biggest size on top of a tall building in Shibuya, one of the biggest cities in Tokyo. It had nothing on it except for a small phone number in the center. Like a copy of The White Album of The Beatles placed on a blue table, it cut a huge white square out of the sky.

First, I thought that the bulletin board was empty and wondered why no one was interested in putting up an ad in such a crowded area. Next, I noticed the phone number, and then I realized that it was the number of the bulletin board company. It was the advertisement of the advertisement. I smiled because it made my mind light as things with good ideas always do.

I thought this ad was very good because it attracts attention and makes you think. Among numerous ads in all colors and designs, a huge blank white square stands out by itself. The ad gives you joy of question-solving and, by doing so, it gives you a good impression about the advertiser. Also, you can call the company on the spot if you are interested.

If I were the advertiser, I would have been tempted to put the name of the company next to or above the phone number. However, an ad with a company name and its phone number is too ordinary for anyone to pay attention to. Actually, you won’t be bothered by the absence of the name. It is not the name but the number that you need first to use the service. The witty design shows how good the company is. Then before trying to find out its name, you take out your phone from your bag. You see the ad and you call.

Even if this design is actually often used when an advertising company advertises itself, there is no denying that it stimulates your mind when you see it for the first time. An advertisement which challenges conventional ideas and your intelligence always wins. I think this simplest bulletin board is one.

☆Let’s make the framework
Now let’s make the framework of your essay following the basic essay structure before you write a full essay. As this is a sketch, make it as simple as possible.
Sample essay framework
【Main Idea = Outline】
a simplest design, eye-catching, stimulating, and practical
【Description of the advertisement】
a huge bulletin board on top of a building in Shibuya, nothing except for a small phone number in the center
【Reaction to the advertisement】
Thought it was empty, and wondered why. Then noticed the phone number, the number of the bulletin board company. I smiled.
【Why you think the advertisement is very good/bad】
attracts attention, makes you think, joy of question-solving, good impression about the advertiser, can call the company on the spot
【Counterargument & Counter-counterargument】
the company name with the phone number, too ordinary
【Conclusion = Wrap-up】
challenges conventional ideas and your intelligence

Note: A counterargument is an expected rebuttal. You can deal with a counterargument in an appropriate part of a paragraph or use a whole paragraph to deal with it

Good luck!

2012/03/04
In 10 minutes after I decided to stay some more time, high school boys came in. One of the boys started talking on his phone. He seemed to be talking with his teacher, reporting his entrance examination results. This reminded me of a student I cannot remember without feeling sorry. I was not able to take care of his study well last autumn and was not able to help him pass the exam of the university he wanted to go to even though he had enough ability. I know the result of the exam of another university he must have taken came out a little after the middle of last month. Although I have inquired about it, the people there didn’t seem to have gotten the information yet. Exams of other universities are still going on anyway. I hope he is doing well. Good luck, another f!

Note: It is a trivial thing again and taking notes about it might be abnormal, but the situation I’m in now, the situation this blog records is abnormal, so I just take notes things that sticks to my mind as much as possible.
On 2012/02/23 (Thu), I left for the fast food restaurant after it got really dark, which was unusual for me.
> The rest of the record: Worked on a class supplement on PC in the afternoon. Did some paper work at the fast food restaurant from 18:30 -22:00. Bought food and came home a little before 22:30.

Although I have written some reasons I go out in the late afternoon: my room light is not light enough and people are less annoying after 17:00, there was another reason. The day before, I also went out and stayed there from18:00-21:25 for the reasons above according to the record. While I was there, the atmosphere was very nice. A man of 60-75/80 years of age, was in the corner from where my whole body could be seen, but he did not seem to be a bother. Rather, for some reason, he sounded nice and seemed to be favorable to me. He seemed to have called for or be waiting for someone. A couple hours later, two young men came. One of them sounded like one of the two people who were playing something like Shogi on the 31st of December last year. The old man offered his seat to them a few times, and they accepted. The young men started Shorgi or something. The old man left a little later. A few hours past, and when I got up to leave a little before 21:30, one of the Shogi men said, “What are we going to do? (どうしよ)” I stopped for a second. Then he made a happy chuckle. Probably he was almost cornered by his opponent but found a way out, I thought. I bundled up and left my seat. Leaving the room, as had become my habit, I looked back to see if f was there (I know I’m kind of obsessed). I was surprised to see there were more people than I had noticed coming in. I saw a young man sitting in another back corner looking at me and looking very sad. I went down the stairs and at the point where I had to pass to get out of the restaurant stood a young man with a young woman. He was facing me, although he was not exactly looking at me. He looked upset and murmuring something. I passed him and went out. He kept staring the same direction. On my way home, I started feeling that it was wrong that I did not stay till 22:00.The next day, I stayed there till a little before 22:00. (That old man seems to be a retiree, and I think I often see him. He is usually there during the day. If I am not wrong, he was there yesterday, too, and left before or when the man who sounded like f came in. I remember guessing he was/had been am architect over hearing what he was saying, loudly.)
