Question:
Summarize the views expressed by the
processor in his/her lecture, and compare them with the points made in the text.
Sample Response:
The professor is skeptical about the global
warming theory and thinks that humankind can deal with whatever may happen in
contrast to the text which argues that global warming is self-evident now and that
we should take measures immediately to cope with its negative effects.
The text claims the causal connection
between the global warming and CO2 emissions from human activities by giving
some circumstantial evidences: acute temperature rise, changes in spring
arrival times, and increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations. It gives some
examples of predicted effects of global warming: rising sea level, the sea
current change, deforestation, and outbreaks of malaria, warning that we should
prioritize this issue as the imminent threat to life on earth.
The professor makes three points to dismiss
the global warming, human involvement in it, and its threat. According to him,
the temperature rise observed so far is not an anomaly in the geologic time
scale, and he points out the possibility that not human activities but other
factors beyond human understanding are involved in the temperature rise. He also
says that humans have experienced major climate changes and have survived. He argues
that we still have time to see if the theory is true and, even if it is, keeping
carbon dioxide in the air at a certain concentration rate is enough to avoid
the disastrous results although the rise will continue over the next fifty
years while we aim to stop it in the latter half of this century. He expects
that the development of technology will help solve the problem.
