Drill 1  Which of the answers below is less appropriate as a response to the following statement? How can you improve it? Statement: The government should solve the problem of extreme inequality.

 

Answer A: I disagree. The government should not have so much power. My money is my money. There is no reason for the government to take away my money and give it to the poor. If you want to help the poor, you donate. You decide how you use your money. I do not think we should use our money to help the poor. They are lazy, useless people. If they need money, they should find a job and get paid. If they want to get higher wages, they should work harder. Also, survival of the fittest is the law of nature. Those who are useless and cannot adapt to this society should vanish. Therefore, the government does not need to do anything for the poor.

Answer B: Although it cannot be helped that different individuals earn differently, such a huge inequality as we see in the capitalist society today should be fixed. In the United States, for example, the top 1% own more than the total wealth of the bottom half, who live paycheck to paycheck. One in seven children are poor. Not to speak of education, many people suffer from lack of food, shelter, and healthcare. The system is designed to take money away from the poor and give it to the rich. This is wrong. Also, it has been proved that society has fewer problems when its wealth gap is smaller. Thus, the related laws should be changed or created.
