Independent Writing Summer 5 Drills
Drill 1 Which of the answers below is less appropriate as an answer to the following question? How can you improve it? Question: Which would you prefer, to marry a rich person you do not love or a poor person you love? Hint: Circle the word love and underline the words rich, poor, and money in the answers, and compare how many and where the words are.
Answer A: I would like
to marry a rich person I love, but, if I had to choose between a rich person I
do not love and a poor person I love, I would choose the former. This is
because we live in the world of capitalism, and here money is power. If I marry
a rich person, I can do anything I want to and buy anything I want. Moreover,
money speaks in emergency. Imagine something horrible happens, such
as a huge earthquake or war. The first thing you need is money. Without money,
you would die. In the end, money is everything, and people respect a rich
person. Therefore, I definitely prefer to marry a rich person.
Answer B: Call me a dreamer, but I prefer to marry a poor person I love. The
main purpose of marriage is reproduction, and reproduction is done between
individuals that love each other. This is universal throughout the animal
kingdom. Of course, we humans are different from other species, and human society
runs with money. Thus, it would be difficult to raise offspring without money.
Also, the average life span of the poor is much shorter than that of the rich. However,
I find no problem with having a poor spouse, because love will help us work
hard and earn enough money to live a decent life in time.
Drill 2 Discuss the 2
questions at the bottom of page 95, and write your answer, giving reasons. Explain
why you do not care the disadvantages.
Use expressions below.
I like X, but I prefer Y. / I like X. However, I prefer Y. /
Although I like X, I prefer Y.
I prefer Y to X. / I prefer doing Y to doing X. / I prefer to do X
rather than to do Y.
