People who are not really interested in music do not have to think that they are an anomaly. The question says “many people”, not “people”, so thinking music important is not universal, though existence of music in cultures is universal and its fundamental significance to humankind can be seen as a matter of fact. Rather, those who seldom listen to music can have an objective viewpoint about behavior related to music. They could observe when, where, and how people listen to music and compare music with other cultural activities.

音楽を聴かない人は異常ではない。課題文も「多くの人」としている。音楽重視は普遍的ではない。ただし文化における音楽の存在は普遍的であり、人類にとって音楽が根本的に重要であることは自明の理とみなされる。めったに音楽を聴かない人はむしろ音楽に関する行動について客観的視点を有する。いつどこでどのように人が音楽を聴くのかを観察し、他の文化的活動と音楽を比べてみることができる。

1.    When: People play music in the morning, during meals, or at parties. They listen to music when they feel sad, happy, or excited.

2.    Where: People listen to music in their room, on the train, or everywhere.

場所： 自分の部屋や電車やどこでも聴く。

3.    How: People enjoy music along with other fun like conversation or feast as part of entertainment. People concentrate on listening to music as a hobby.

方法： 娯楽の一部として会話や御馳走のような他の楽しみと共に音楽を楽しむ。趣味として集中して聴く。

4.    Why: People may want to shut noises out, make the room filled with their favorite sound, and feel good. Probably people listen to music to release stress, recover from sorrow, amplify joy, or get inspired. They may also use music to express what they cannot put into words.

理由： 雑音を遮断し、部屋を好きな音楽で満たし、気分良くなりたいのかもしれない。おそらくストレス解消や悲しみからの回復や喜びの増幅や霊感のために音楽を聴くのだろう。言葉にできないことを表現するためにも音楽を使うかもしれない。

Birds sing and we humans play music. Music is important to many people probably because it has power to facilitate living.

It is natural to listen to music and music supports our lives. Babies often swing to music without being taught. We all live in some kind of rhythms, melodies and lyrics. Even those who do not think much of music can hum some phrase. Not just natural, music supports our lives. It helps express emotions. When sad, we are healed by our favorite songs. When happy, we dance to a popular tune. It also helps establish lifestyle. Many start their day by turning on their music player so that they can keep their cool all day. It is well-known that one’s favorite music genre corresponds with one’s lifestyle. Rockers and rappers are honest and independent, and it might be difficult to find a rigid and frigid jazz fan.

音楽を聴くのは自然であり、生活を支える。赤ちゃんは教えられていないのによく音楽に合わせて体をゆする。皆、何らかのリズム・メロディー・詞の中で生きている。音楽を大したことと思っていない人でさえ何かのフレーズ（楽句）を口ずさむことはできる。単に自然なだけでなく、生活を支えてくれる。感情表現を助けてくれる。悲しい時はお気に入りの曲で癒され、幸福な時は流行歌に合わせて踊る。音楽はまた生き方の確立を助けてくれる。多くの人が、一日冷静でいるために朝起きるとプレーヤーのスイッチを入れる。好きな音楽ジャンルが生き方と一致しているのはよく知られている。ロッカーやラッパーは正直で独立しているし、融通が利かず冷淡なジャズファンを見つけるのは困難かもしれない。

In addition, music is important for many people because it is the best culture that they can live by. It is basically all about sensing and feeling, easy to access, and peaceful. Music stimulates our senses in good ways. You just like the sound or the lyrics, or both. To understand music, you can think but you do not have to. You just feel it. Also, you do not need a lot of money or time to enjoy music. Moreover, music promotes harmony, not discordance, in human relations. You never see fights between classical music fans and hip-hop fans. People go for music because of its benign and likable nature.

加えて音楽が多くの人にとって重要なのは音楽が共に生きるのに最も良い文化だからだ。音楽は基本的に感覚と気分が全てであり、近づきやすく、平和的だ。音楽は良い形で感覚を刺激する。音か詞、あるいは両方が単に好きなのだ。音楽を理解するために考えることもできるが考えなくてもよい。感じ取ればよいだけだ。また、お金や時間もかからない。更に、音楽は人間関係における不一致ではなく調和を促進する。クラシック音楽ファンとヒップホップファンが喧嘩するのを見ることはない。音楽の無害で好ましい性格のゆえに人は音楽を好む。

Moreover, music provides us with a special experience. Music lets you play in the musician’s world. Some music has the power to make our mind tuned to eternity. In my case, pieces of Moody Blues, especially Watching and Waiting, does the work. The instant the sound comes into my brain, my mind will blend in to their world of peace and gentleness, the world that made them make their music. The experience is important to me and there are numerous similar comments on various kinds of music uploaded on YouTube. The reason why music is important for many people is that it is the instrument that gives wings to their souls.

さらには、音楽は特別な経験を提供してくれる。音楽家の世界で遊ばせてくれる。心を永遠と同調させる力のある音楽もある。私の場合はムーディーブルースの曲、特にウオッチング・アンド・ウエイティングがそうだ。その音が私の脳に入った瞬間、彼らの平和と優しさの世界、彼らに彼らの音楽を作らせた世界に心が溶け込む。その経験は私にとって重要であり、ユーチューブ上にアップロードされた様々な音楽に同様のコメントがある。音楽が多くの人にとって重要なのは魂に翼を与える道具だからだ。

It is certain that our world would be an unbearable place to live (in) without music. Just as birds need to chirp, so humans need to string notes, whether by themselves or by reliving others doing it, for some meaning of life.

音楽がなかったら世界は住むのに耐えられない場所になるのは確かだ。鳥が鳴くのが必要なように人は人生の意味のために自らであれ他人がそうしているのを追体験することによってであれ音を奏でる必要がある。
