Native Americans of the Southwest
The Hopis and Zunis were the best farmers
north of Mexico who a ted to an
extremely difficult environment in the south western part of the p t-day United States. There were few
large g e animals, so they had
to grow their food in the desert. They used i n, digging long d hes from springs and mountain s ms to their fields. They lived in m ried houses made of adobe and built
either on the c e as
apartment houses or on top of flat-topped mountains as villages. Spanish e res called the people Pueblos. The
Navajos are another people of the southwestern desert but developed an e ly different way of life. They lived
in family groups that s d out
in the desert. In this way, they avoided overhunting the w e and survived. Their traditional house
is a round house called hogan. They have
been skilled a ns. They were
the best w rs in North America
and made m t fabrics
using cotton and wool. Their artists d
te hours to creating brilliantly e ed designs of the unique sand
painting. They use different colored sands and winds destroy their works by n l, but the b f experience of beauty is enough for
them to j fy long, hard labor.
The Apache are another t e
of the southwest. They came from Mexico. They were r ders, feared by the Pueblos and Navajos. As
r tly as 100 years ago, many
of them still preferred their traditional n dic
life. They farm and h d sheep
now.
