Alcohol Drinking in
America
Although drinking alcohol
is viewed as an i al part of
social life for many college students as it eases t ions, releases i ons, and generally adds to the fun,
social drinking can create problems. Alcohol-related a e accidents are the l ding cause of death among teenagers and
young adults. The lowering of the legal drinking age increases the number of t ic accidents. About two-thirds of
American adults drink alcohol and at least 10 percent of them have social, p ical, or medical problems related to
alcohol use, with 10 percent of them being d t on alcohol. Heavy or p ed drinking can lead to serious
health problems. The regular use of substantial amounts of alcohol is a ed with the conditions such as
high blood p e, stroke, u rs, cancers, cirrhosis of the liver, and
depression. Underage drinking is almost u sal even though it is illegal for the
age group to p se alcoholic beverages
and the occurrence of “binge drinking” is w d. Those who were college-bound
and drank less than those who were not college-bound in their senior years in
high school s ss their p rs after graduation. As binge-drinking
causes many problems, alcohol on campus is not p tted any more in an i sing number of universities.
