TOEFL iBT Independent Writing What aspect of your hometown would you like to change, and in what way?

Suppose that you had the power to change one thing about your hometown. What aspect of your hometown would you like to change, and in what way? Support your ideas with specific details and reasons.

Let’s Think

1.       What does the following proverb mean? Do you feel the same way?

“Every bird thinks its own nest charming.”

2.       Here are some hints to think of what to change about your hometown.

1)     Suppose you were an outsider. What part of your town is embarrassing?

2)     Remember other towns and cities you know and compare them with yours. Is your hometown as beautiful as they are, as convenient as they are, or as exciting as they are?

3)     Think of your ideal town and find what your hometown lacks to be it.

Here are some things that can be the hint for the change you could write about:

1.     facilities: hospital, community center, library, swimming pool

2.     system: events, neighborhood watch group, disaster planning

3.     environment: green, pollution, littering, relationships, manners

Now make a presentation of your idea about what to change about your town in front of your partner or group members. Ask each other questions or make suggestions about the presentation.

Use the following procedure if you like.

1.     Problem: What is wrong?

e. g. Senior citizens do not have places to get together. Some of them gather at local coffee shops but it is rather expensive to do it every day.

2.     Goal: How would you change it?

e. g. I would make all coffee shops in town free to the elderly and also have them have nurses and counselors on call. The expenses would be subsidized by the municipal office, in other words, tax money.

3.     Expected Benefits: How will it benefit my hometown?

e. g. All seniors in town will have chances to enjoy themselves, their safety and health can be monitored easily, and the fact that my town has places for the elderly is something to be proud of in itself.

Essay for Ideas and Expressions    Barron’s Writing for the TOEFL iBT, pp. 247-248

To increase the volume of your essay, find the shortest paragraph and …

1) describe/develop the main idea well: If a paragraph has only one or two sentences, chances are that you have not described/developed well enough. Make sure that each paragraph has its main idea, supporting details (examples), conclusion, and additional supporting details like counter-argument treatment if necessary.

2) describe/develop each sentence well: A statement usually has some exception or needs some condition or concession. Look for a sentence that you can add a reason, condition, concession, or any other additional information, and add “except …”, “as long as …”, “although …”, etc.

3) describe words well: Which of the following sentences gives a clear picture of someone’s pet?

A) I have a pet.   B) I have a cute cat.   C) I have a little fluffy kitten. With two adjectives and a specific noun, Sentence C) depicts an adorable pet well and it happens to be the longest of the three. Also, use transitions such as First, Also, Moreover, Finally, or Therefore, when necessary.

4) discuss other choices: Even if the Writing Topic does not say, “Discuss the two views” or “Compare and contrast the choices,” you can write about other choices. Doing so will make your essay more convincing and longer. Make sure that you do not digress.

5) take up counter-arguments if necessary: While you are writing, sometimes a counter-argument, “Well, but what about this case?” comes up to your mind. Then it is better not to ignore it but take it up and give a counter-counter-argument or two. By doing so, you can confirm your argument. If you can do it well, you will get a high score.

The key to remember is to try to put what you want to say into words as accurately as you can. Then you cannot help adding some more words and sentences, and some more... In the end, your essay will have many words.

Talk to Me

Herman’s dolphins learned the meaning of more than 30 signals, including nouns and verbs. They also mastered grammar rules. The Kewalo dolphins were also able to grasp abstractions. By the way the animals acted, they, too, demonstrated that they were seeing themselves. Marino concluded that it wasn’t ethical to keep and study such an intelligent creature in captivity and switched to using imaging technology to analyze the size and structure of brains from dolphins that has died of natural causes. Mario’s calculations showed that bottlenose dolphins have an EQ of 4.2, and dolphins on average higher EQ than primates. Suddenly, Bijyo, a juvenile female, glides in and gulps down the eel, bringing the lesson to an abrupt end. Deni appears outraged, as if Bijyo has committed a serious offense. 9段落 such structured social patterns may help explain the dolphin brain. Individuals who live in complex social groups require complex cognition. To thrive, you have to understand what the social rules arewhen you have to obey them and when you can get away with not obeying themand who the players are. Why Denise’s work is exciting is that none of the dolphin studies have been truly two-way. The humans could request or the dolphins could request, but Denise is working to achieve a back-and forth. And if the dolphins introduce their own whistles, that would be amazing.

Ideas and Expressions

Agree:

As written in this passage, some researchers who have learned that dolphins are as aware as a two-year old human is have stopped their research on dolphins in captivity. This means that if given the same understanding, people around the world will do the same. However, the consensus has not been made while some dolphins suffer. Therefore, there should be a regulation to protect them. Personally, I think what humans have been doing since the Industrial Revolution is a serious violation of animal rights. We have invaded their habitat and contaminated air, water, and soil. About half the birds in North America have gone extinct over the past 50 years, for example. Other species, including those are useful to humans, are decreasing. Before nature punishes us, we may have to slow down, do soul searching on our way of life, and humbly stop deciding which animal should be protected based on our standard.

Disagree:

Protection of animal rights and that of human rights to pursue happiness are sometimes not compatible. We eat cows, pigs, and chickens, all of which have been proven to have higher level of cognition than we think. Even mice are reported to show empathy. Therefore, if we talk about dolphins, we have to talk about all the animals as it is difficult to draw a line between animals to be saved and those that can be forsaken. It is said that even an insect of 3 cm has a spirit of 1.5 cm in Japan. Also, many cultures around the world are dependent on hunt for whales, which is biological cousins of dolphins and are highly intelligent. Banning their practice deprives of their livelihood just as cattle farmers will lose their job if meat consumption is prohibited. Thus, blanket treatment of this issue should be avoided.

The Root Cause of Global Poverty Homework

Read the excerpt from Confessions of a Former Bastard Cop and answer the following question.

https://medium.com/@OfcrACab/confessions-of-a-former-bastard-cop-bb14d17bc759

Question:
The writer suggests abolishing the current policing system in the US. Do you think the same idea should be applied to the Japanese police? Why/Why not?

Answer Key

Agree:

Although many think the Japanese police is functioning well and that there is no need to abolish it, I think it better to consider abolishing the police.

Police as the guard for those in power: That the police are not for the public but for the authority is universal. The Japanese police has been helping for the government to execute its decisions. During WWII, those who were against the war were arrested and some were attacked or killed. A well-known example is the death of Takiji Kobayashi, a novelist and communist who was tortured in prison.

Cases of police brutality: Minor cases of police brutality exist in today’s Japan. Over the past few years, those who express their opinion against the government have been targeted by the police. In 2008 in Shibuya, Tokyo, organizers of an event to see the mansion of the then prime minister Aso met a surprise arrest during the event although the event had been reported and permitted in advance. In 2019 in Hokkaido, during the midterm-election speech of PM Abe, a man who cried out loud to request Abe’s resignation was physically removed from the venue. In 2020, in Tokyo, Women silently holding picket signs to protest the policies of the administration were escorted out from the area where the PM was making a speech. Also, a Kurdish man who was going to the dentist’s by car was stopped, dragged out of the car, and restrained by the police in Shibuya, Tokyo, having his neck injured which required a month to heal in 2020.

Need for the total social transformation: Japan has been in economic downturn for decades, and the government has been overtly exploiting the public over the past eight years. The society has been aging and the income gap has been widening. Especially, the Abe administration has been cutting the budget for welfare and raising the consumption tax while bailing out big corporations. TPP and FTA with other laws will change the Japanese society into that of today’s America. Poverty will increase and crime rate will rise. The police will show their real face. To avoid the scenario, fundamental transformation of Japan into a fair society, where the existence of the police is meaningless should be worked on.

The Root Cause of Global Poverty

Today, the principal cause of misery in the world isn’t a lack of food or education. It’s violence and lawlessness. These crimes are rarely punished by law. Often, the police are predators. The violence is bad enough. But it’s also interfering with development assistance. Haugen argues that lawlessness, like joblessness or illiteracy, is a form of deprivation. It’s part of a class structure. 8段落 you can’t just do good. You have to grapple with evil. Authoritarian rulers impose their will by making an example of anyone who stands up to them. In corrupt police forces, some officers are predators, but others want to serve the public. Most officers are somewhere in the middle, willing to go along with whichever side prevails. When citizens in a lawless county see a powerful criminal brought to justice, they’re shocked. They begin to hope. They gain confidence. They raise their voices. The system begins to respond to them. You can’t police the world. You can only help those who are willing to police themselves.

Ideas and Expressions

Agree:

-As seen in the examples of the World Bank project and the opportunistic property of the police, the reality is distinct and complicated. Therefore, it is impossible to police the world.

-Policing the world is no different from violating autonomy. Invasions have occurred under the banner of intervention of domestic affairs with force. Japan occupied other countries with the excuse of “civilizing” the people. The Iraq War was to “liberate” the people from the dictator. Both caused excruciating suffering among people.

-Reform requires timing. French Revolution occurred after people suffered enough. Defeat in the Pacific War brought the pacifist constitution to Japan. African Americans have been suffering all the time and Black Lives Matter is about ten years old, yet it was not until the emergence of the video showing the lynching of George Floyd during pandemic under failed administration that the whole nation stood by the activists.

Disagree:

-Waiting for wills for change will help lose more lives. Rwandan Genocide could have ended earlier if the UN had intervened it. At this moment around the world, there are countless numbers of people who are suffering and dying from everyday violence. We need a strong entity to police the world. Amand Giridharadas says that the fantasy of the win-win is that we can help the people down below without intervening with the people standing on their necks, (that) we can lift the people down below up without disturbing people standing on their neck. It is impossible to end poverty without ending attacks on the oppressed in the first place, and to end police brutality, it should be revealed to the world. If we had some entity to monitor and intervene violence around the world, the world poverty would decline at a faster rate than now.

Fordlandia

Grandin thus argues that Ford saw the Brazilian interior less as a business opportunity than as a means of starting afreshan unspoiled setting like the Garden of Eden in which rational industrialization could be imposed. Grandin sees in the collapse of the Amazonian project a reflection of the demise of Ford’s particular American Dream. But Ford himself never visited Fordlandia, which suggests it was always more of a distracting hobby than a serious personal commitment. In this disconnection lies the weakness of this book. The problem is that, for all his flaws, Ford was an industrial genius, while his namesake town was nothing more than a rich man’s folly.
