☆ Sample for Ideas and Expressions
【My choice】Like Ben, I find it exciting to meet new people,
but when it comes to roommates of a university dormitory, I would rather choose
them by myself.
【Supporting
Details】Living in a
dorm room is a precious experience which, if you get the most out of it, will
be a lifetime treasure. Whether it is possible or
not depends on whether the roommates are your friends or the arranged. With the arranged roommates, you may end up just
sharing the space and having small talks once in a
while unless they are
miraculously compatible to you. Even if you
match, it takes a while to open up to each other. If you choose people you already know
well, you can start a fulfilling dorm life on day one.
【Counterargument-treatment】I know that networking
is important. As Ben says, unexpected friendships will expand your life. However,
networking can be done outside of dorms. Also, it is often
the case that most acquaintances are attractive or exciting to be with but not the
type you can stand being with for more than a few hours. It is preferable that
roommates are people you can spend time with forever.
【Conclusion】After all, a dormitory room
is a half-private place. It is fundamentally a place for rest and recharging, a
space for reflection and development, and thus sharing the room with people I can
be naturally on good terms with would be the best. (235 words)
【Main Idea】I prefer to choose my roommates because the university assignment
can be racist.
【Supporting Details】As I am a Japanese, they may make me join other Asian students. Although
I have no problem with sharing a room with other Asians, this is different from
what I expect in my dorm
life. I would like to live with people from non-Asian countries to experience
totally different values,
mindset, and customs from mine and
would like to make efforts for mutual understanding.
【Counterargument-treatment】University officials may think it for the good of Asians to stay
together in a non-Asian country, but this is not what they are supposed to
assume. Indeed, living with other Asians
would be comfortable because we have a lot in common, and the comfort will be
the stumbling block to going
out and mingling with people with various
backgrounds.
【Conclusion】Universities should not decide which students should hang out
together. (148 words)
