Lesson 25
Drills
Drill
1 Which answer is more appropriate to the following question? Do you agree or
disagree with the following statement? We can have a real democracy.
A.
Countries that call themselves a democracy are
actually oligarchy, ruled by the vested interests. Even the U.S., the pioneer
of a democratic country, has not realized the most popular policies like
universal healthcare. Also, it has lost what people once had such as a decent
minimum wage and tuition-free colleges. The wealthy and huge corporations buy
politicians to kill the laws that are good for the people. They also suppress
voting. Thus, democracy is a pie in the sky.
B.
It is hard to achieve democracy. In the past,
people paid the price for democracy with their lives. Thanks to them, we have
democratic constitutions and laws that protect our rights. Unfortunately, free
trade, technological advancement, and media propaganda have helped billionaires
discourage people from protecting democracy. However, there are more people
than billionaires. If people keep fighting, it is possible that we will have a
real democracy.
Drill 2 Discuss the following
statement, write a short essay on it including sentences with the structures

transportation can bring us more leisure time.

● 疑問詞ever ~, S V …「たとえ何が/誰が/いつ/どこで/どんなに~でも、SV…。」
Hints for Points: It is possible to have extra time you can use as you
please if you get to the destination earlier than before thanks to faster
transportation. The faster you can transport, the more work you will be
assigned. No matter how fast transportation becomes, our system rids us of free
time.
