1 Which of the following answers is
better as a response to the following question? With the help of technology, students nowadays are becoming
much smarter.
Answer
A: I agree. First, schools have a television set in each classroom. Students
can watch videos and educational programs, so they can understand the content
of the textbooks well. Second, students can learn more effectively because of
the computer, on which we can use software for studies. For example, doing
drills on my computer helps me learn English and math quickly. Lastly, the
Internet helps us look up things quickly. Therefore, we are getting much
smarter now.
Answer
B: Although students are learning more efficiently than before, they may not be
thinking much. For example, when you see a phrase that is not in a dictionary, it
took a long time or often impossible to find its meaning before Google started,
but now we can find it in a second. Thus, we are learning and understanding
more than before. However, because we can find the answer easily now, we use
our brain less. We had to think about how to find the information before, while
we do not have to now. This change might be making our brain softer.

Discuss the following statement, write a short essay on it including
sentences with the structures below, and write comments on or correct mistakes
of each other’s essay. Technology makes reading much more effective.
●要求・主張・提案 that S V原形 ~「~だと要求・主張・提案。」(V原形は仮定法現在)
Parents demanded that the government provide students with tablets.
●as well as ~ 「~同様に」 (~は名詞・動名詞およびその相当語句)
The Internet allows us to look up a word whose meaning we do not know as
well as watching videos.
Hints for Points: Reference is easier and faster thanks to the Internet.
Highlighted parts are shared with other readers. Finding a tag on a paper book is easier than
one in an electronic reader. Screens do
not allow marginal notes and make highlighting troublesome even though both of
these actions play important roles in reading, internalizing the content.
