TOEFL iBT, Independent Writing, Do you agree that your county has become more similar to other countries because of modern communication and transportation methods? - rewrite -

Writing Topic
With many technological advances in communication and transportation, many people feel that the various countries of the world are becoming more similar to each other. Do you agree that your county has become more similar to other countries because of modern communication and transportation methods? Use specific examples and details to explain why or why not.

☆Let’s Think
Let’s make sure the last part of the question before getting to the main point.
1)    What is communication?
2)    Give examples of transportation?
3)    What does “because of modern communication and transportation methods” mean?

The tense of this question is present perfect, “has become”, and it uses comparative “more similar”, so that your response is likely to have comparison between the past and the present of your country and objective conclusion on whether your country shares more in common with other countries than before.

Does your county look more similar to other countries compared to what it was 150 years ago when, it took a month for a newspaper, the only news medium then, to reach America from Britain and when samurai ruled Japan or when taking an airplane cost a fortune and the Internet did not exist? Have the street views changed? Remember the lifestyle of your grandparents. What do they to eat, wear, and enjoy?

☆Top-down Development: from general ideas to specific ideas
Let’s compare the present and the past and make conclusions. Make sure that the description starts with the general and moves on to the specific.

Homogenization in materialistic aspects through economic globalization
The development of communication and transportation methods has enabled large corporations to spread the same products all over the world more thoroughly than before and boosted the homogenization of the world, at least materialistically. My country Japan is not an exception. People used to live in wooden houses, wear kimono, and eat rice and fish, but these days, they live with something western or American. They live in buildings made of concrete and steel whose interiors are filled with electronic appliances and modern furniture, wear clothes found in western media, and often eat meat-and-bread-based food.

Westernization of popular music
Trends in popular music reflect changes of a society very clearly. Japanese pop music has become closer to those in other countries than before. Japanese pop songs were slow-tempo and sounded like traditional folk music before, but now most of them are up-tempo and sound like American and British pops, which have been influenced by the music in other parts of the world. Since music affects many aspects of life, it can be said that our general mentality has also become more similar to those in other countries. This change, the pervasiveness of western culture through music, corresponds to the development of technologies for sharing materials and information. The change of media from the radio to TV to the Internet and more opportunities for concert tours enabled western music industry to market and familiarize its products to more people in my country.

Assimilation to other cultures through history
The large wave of global assimilation has affected Japan, where I live. As Yuval Noah Harari points out in his book Sapiens, countries and cultures have been integrated into ones with larger realms since ancient times. An island country Japan has also always been in the influential spheres of other cultures, even during the period of cultural isolation-most high levels of thought in the Edo Era were expressed in Chinese. In other words, it has syncretized other cultures into its cultures. Rice farming and use of Chinese characters are examples of cultures Japan has shared with other countries. In modernization and industrialization after the Meiji Restoration, Japan has taken in Western cultures through their languages, and the process has accelerated after WWII for not only geopolitical reasons but also development of the means of communication and transportation. It is natural that it has become similar to other developed countries both in fundamental aspects of daily life such as housing and clothing and in inner life. Therefore, there is no denying the opinion that my country has become more similar to other countries than it used to be through interaction with other countries by communication and transportation.

TOEFL iBT, Independent Writing, Most experiences in our lives that seemed difficult at the time become valuable lessons for the future. - rewrite -

Writing Topic
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Most experiences in our lives that seemed difficult at the time become valuable lessons for the future. Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.

☆Let’s Think

Let’s take a look at the details of the topic. It says, “MOST experiences,” so some experiences, those irreversibly damaging cases like child abuse or rare disasters are excluded. It says, “seemed difficult at the time,” and “valuable lessons for the future,” so it is talking about the tough experiences that make you learn something. I guess most people agree with this statement and can easily come up with examples ranging from your childhood piano lessons to moving to a foreign country to losing your pet.

Examples of Harsh Experiences
going abroad,
sharing a room with someone
living by yourself
living in poverty
having trouble with your neighbor
fighting a disease
having an injury
practicing piano
taking a difficult test,
failing a crucial test
starting a project
being in charge of something important
being extremely busy
making a serious mistake,
hurting someone,
embarrassing yourself,
being rejected
being betrayed,
being misunderstood,
being discriminated against
losing something or someone important
having a difficult relationship

When and where did you have the experience? What was tough? How did you feel then? How do you feel about the experience now? What have you learned from it?

Sample Response
When I was in my kindergarten, teachers would often take the children to a nearby shrine sitting on top of a hill, for which it would have been appropriate to be called a cliff. To reach the top, we had to walk up long and steep rock steps which were lined straight from the foot to the top. A few children ran up, followed by most of the others at a slower pace than they walk on the flat surface. As a weak child, I toiled in the small group at the end. I felt as if the steps would never end. I was also afraid of getting stuck in the middle. Over time, the labor made me stop even worrying and focus on walking up. Reaching the top gave me relief and smiles of some children noticing that I had made it. Decades later, when I was not weak anymore, I went there and did the task. It turned out to be a tough one even to an adult. I felt for a moment the same fear that I had as a child that I might get stuck in the middle. I told myself that I would reach the top if I kept moving my legs, and I realized that I had been telling the same thing to myself whenever I was doing something hard and that the activity of my kindergarten had given me the lesson that a predicament will end if you do not give in but carry on.

Your Response
Answer the following questions.
When and Where did you experience it?

What was tough?

How did you feel?

How do you feel about the experience now?

What have you learned from the experience?

Pre-TOEFL Writing, Watching TV is a useful or enjoyable way of spending time. - rewrite -

Writing Topic
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement. Watching TV is a useful or enjoyable way of spending time. Support your response with specific reasons and examples.

☆Let’s Think
This statement has the article “a” before the expression “useful or enjoyable way of spending time”, so it means that although it is not “the” best, watching TV is as useful or enjoyable as activities that are considered good. What are useful and enjoyable ways of spending time? What do you usually do when you have some free time and try not to waste it? You might read, listen to music, watch a movie, work out, do something creative like painting, or chill out with your family or friends? Is watching TV as worth spending your precious time on as other choices?

☆Ideas and Expressions
TV watching is useful or enjoyable.
1.    As long as you keep an eye on how you use it, TV can be an inexpensive, handy tool for fun.
2.    Through TV shows, you can learn the norm, culture, language, or trend of the society.
3.    Some special programs such as live broadcasts of sporting events, documentaries, and foreign language programs are hardly available elsewhere.
4.    Popular TV programs or ads provide conversation pieces, which are good icebreakers.
5.    One good thing about TV watching is that it allows you to learn things that you did not intend to. By keeping TV on or zapping channels, you can come across interesting people, useful information, or moving stories. It is like taking a walk in an unfamiliar neighborhood and finding a lovely garden or sitting among strangers and hearing an eye-opening story.

TV watching is a waste of time.
1.    Most of the time spent watching TV is spent watching TV ads(TV advertisement or TV commercials). They may make you want needless goods or follow fashion trends obsessively.

2.    It is a passive activity. You just sit and watch, while you should be doing something more important.

3.    TV can make you narrow-minded or brainwashed, not aware of what is really going on in the world because it is sponsored by corporations, which can manipulate the content.

4.    It is not a good information source anymore. The information provided by most of the TV programs is superficial. Also, TV news is not really new as the information on the Internet is updated by the minute although it might be more trustworthy.

☆Sample Essay Structure  構成例
【Thesis = Outline】In moderation, watching TV is useful and enjoyable.
【Good Point 1】Watching big events on a large screen at home is enjoyable.
【Good Point 2】 TV-watching is useful for spending time with others because it is inclusive.
【Counterargument-treatment】Although most programs might be good for nothing, some are good, or educational. Also, it is true that TV is addictive and you could waste your time, but if you can control yourself, TV poses no problem just as alcohol and gambling helps you enjoy life unless you indulge yourself in them too much.
【Conclusion = Wrap-up】TV can provide a good time if used wisely.

【Good/Bad point 1】
【Good/Bad point 2】

☆Sample Paragraph Development
Sample 1
【Main Idea】 TV-watching is useful for spending time with others because it is inclusive.
【Supporting Details】You can usually share the content of TV with others and with anyone. For example, you can enjoy an evening with your family or friends watching popular programs. TV is especially useful when you spend time with someone you know little about. Popular TV programs are often used to entertain guests. You just watch TV together, and in time you can laugh together or pick up a conversation piece from the content of the program such as an idol singer or a succor game result. If your guest requests FoxNews, you can just watch the ultra-right-wing news show with him and learn what the Right have to say.
【Wrap-up】 TV is a good medium for relationship-building.

Sample 2
【Main Idea】TV is addictive.
【Supporting Details】For many people, the act of watching TV itself is the objective. Many automatically turn on TV when they have some free time and keep it on, without selecting programs. Even when they select a program, in a few minutes, they get hypnotized and keep staring at the screen for hours without remembering the content. Conscious use can avoid such behavior but the problem is that TV makes us believe doing something productive and feel good when in fact we could be doing something more memorable such as listening to a good piece of music or talking with someone.
【Conclusion】 TV-watching is detrimental to our lives.
