-around 9:00 kept sitting on the mattress, gave up trying to sleep, and got up.

11:11 (typed up this record again and put it up on the web)

Did household work and went to the fast food restaurant to supplement sleep loss in the afternoon.

(Added on the next day 2012/03/05 Note: Yesterday, (2012/03/04) a middle-aged man in a long sleeved camouflage T-shirt was talking on the phone rather loudly and in a tone of slight emergency right below my apartment door and right in front of the apartment gate when I was locking my room door to go out in the early afternoon. When I started going down the stairs, the man came into the property and started coming toward the stairs. This would have been enough to drive me back into my room a few month ago or in the evening, but since it was light and I wanted to be away from my neighbor(s) and solve the problem of sleep shortage (2.5 hours the night before) as soon as possible and I kept going down. The man came up the stairs. I kept my eyes fixed on him. He did not look like a threat. A little before he passed me, he bowed, which I did not return knowingly it was impolite but thinking it was stupid to pay respect to him if he was one of my abusers, the timing of his unnatural behavior increasing the possibility of his being one. He went into the room next to the next room of mine.http://junglecrowsister.blogspot.com/2012/03/20120305-mon-went-to-bed-around-2330-of.html)

I tried to take a nap twice. I think I slept the first 40 minutes. Right after I started trying to sleep, I had a fit in my right leg. I looked around to see if anyone was holding a cell phone because I have noticed whenever I feel the electric shock or have a fit there in the restaurant, there are some people holding a cell phone, many of whom looking at me, but I couldn’t find any today. After that, I had neither e-shocks nor fits.

Although I was about to go home after 16:00, I expected that I was going to be attacked tonight and tried to sleep again. Sunday-Monday nights are almost always heavy-attack nights. I wasn’t able to sleep but being able to continually close my eyes made me feel better. At home, in 10 minutes after I close my eyes, e-shocks will come. Note: when I decided to stay and try to sleep again at the last moment and stopped clearing the table, taking the position of sleeping, one of the people who stood up at the same time I was getting to leave made a noise tch. I write this down just because it stood out in the very good atmosphere at that time. People had been very nice and polite all the time I was there.

In 10 minutes after I decided to stay some more time, high school boys came in. One of the boys started talking on his phone. He seemed to be talking with his teacher, reporting his entrance examination results. This reminded me of a student I cannot remember without feeling sorry. I was not able to take care of his study well last autumn and was not able to help him pass the exam of the university he wanted to go to even though he had enough ability. I know the result of the exam of another university he must have taken came out a little after the middle of last month. Although I have inquired about it, the people there didn’t seem to have gotten the information yet. Exams of other universities are still going on anyway. I hope he is doing well. Good luck, another f!
(To f and to nice and kind people)

Note: While I was at the fast food restaurant last night, two men spoke on the phone loudly, which hardly ever happens there. As far as I remember, it was the first time.

One young man kept talking loudly on the phone about how he/his acquaintance was having difficulty finding a job, that he has more difficulty in it than those with BA because he is a science major, and that the job-hunting may continue till May.

The other man of middle-old age kept talking loudly on the phone about what he did/didn’t at Kannai and repeated the word Kannai about 5 times.

Both of them left soon after they finished talking.

Supersonic/Electronic Weapon 不特定多数による長期にわたる原因不明の嫌がらせ(6)

2012/03/03 (Sat) Went to bed around 23:00 on Friday. Slept from 0:00-4:00 + 6:30-9:00 (4 + 2.5 hrs).
At 23:55, 4 - 5 electric shocks to my head (became stronger one after another).
At 23:59, 3 – 4 e-shocks to my head (became stronger one after another).
Both of them were accompanied by beam-like sensations.
around 4:00, the game/car-like noise woke me up. After I got up, it was gone.
At 4:28, a loud unnatural cough of an old male right below my window.
Between 4:30-6:00, Took medicine, prepared for classes and started trying to sleep again.
At 6:15, an e-shock to my head (weak).
At 6:23, an e-shock to my head (a little stronger).

Had lessons from 13:30 to 19:10 at Yotusya. Left school a little past 19:20, stayed at the fast food restaurant in my station from a little after 20:00 to around 21:30, bought food, took some copies, and came home around 22:00.

Note: Yesterday evening, before I went to the fast food restaurant at the station, I used the bathroom on the first floor of the same building. When I approached the area, I noticed an anomaly. An extremely tall young woman well-dressed all in black, not for funeral, stood still facing me. Although I didn’t see her face, I felt she was looking at me. A woman usually looks at herself in the mirror in the bathroom. She was standing in front of the huge mirror but not looking at it. Because of uncomfortable experiences in the past about having an eye contact with such a person―many women used to look into my eyes with evil smile in bathrooms anywhere till at least last year―I passed her and went into the booth in the far back. On last Monday, a well-dressed, middle-aged (?) woman (middle height and chubby) with oval sunglasses that shone like those of dragonflies, wearing her hair up, came out of the booth, passed me, and went out of the bathroom staring at me all the time when I went into another bathroom in the same building, which was closer to the fast food restaurant. I remember two other times when young women, also well-dressed, acted unnaturally in the same bathroom, both of them looked upset or angry and looked at me in a strong way. I saw both of them on before I went to the fast food shop. One of them on Monday evening after work. The other, I do not remember. I saw both of them within a couple of months.

2012/03/01 (Thu) Went to bed around 0:30. Slept from 1:00-7:00 (6 hrs).
Around 0:30, the game/car-like noise, hurting my eardrums.
Around 1:00, 3 electric shock to my head + fits of my right foot.
At 1:05, an 3=shock to my head + a fit of my right foot + the noise Goh

I think I woke up naturally. A 6-hour straight sleep enabled me to get up soon after I woke up.

A 15-minute shadowing caused pain in my left lung, although I did the same thing yesterday for the first time since I caught a cold and had no pain.

Worked at home all day, marking mock test essays and making class supplement.

My eyes seem to be making small movements all the time. It seems to be vibrating. I found this a couple of months ago when I found a small spider moving in a ceiling light was actually a small crump of dust. When I approached the light to make sure it was dust not a spider today, however, the dust still looked like a spider moving at the bottom of the light to my eyes.

I think I’ll go to the fast food restaurant tomorrow afternoon, though I don’t think I’ll stay there till late… :)

Class Supplement, TOEFL Essay, one change in the twentieth century that is most important to remember

Writing Topic
There were many changes in the twentieth century. What do you think is the one change in the twentieth century that is most important to remember? Include specific reasons to justify your choice.

Let’s think
The questions of the same type as today’s topic are as follows:
What invention in the last 100 years has been most beneficial for people in your country?
What discovery in the last 100 years has been most beneficial for people in your country? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice. (Note: The difference between discovery and invention is that you discover something that has existed all the time but you did not know it was there till then, while you invent something that did not exist before. For example, Newton discovered gravity while Bell invented a telephone.)

Neither of the superlatives in these questions, most important and most beneficial, has the article “the.” This means that you do not have to decide the most important change in the 20th century. There are some most important changes that happened in the last century, and you are supposed to pick up one of them and explain why it has the highest level of importance.

It is rather easy to think of the answer for this type of question. For today’s question, you can easily come up with changes like the development of the information technology. Probably the difficult part is to explain why, but remember, the hints are in the questions. In this case, the hints are the words “change” and “most important.” They are related to great moments in history: the story of before and after the change/invention/discovery. What is expected in your essay is probably the description of how great the impact of something was, in other words, in what way and how much it has changed society and/or the environment.

Also, let’s not forget the superlative, “most important to remember.” It requires you to show why you think the change you have chosen is more important to remember compared to other changes. The changes should have been dramatic and unprecedented. They should have turned the world upside down or profoundly changed our perceptions or thoughts. It might be a good idea to use these kinds of expressions and give specific examples to prove it. For example, the advent of the Internet has caused an irreversible change; it has become the infrastructure of our life, making the world dependent on it.

Hints for points
The rapid development of technology
Technological breakthroughs had happened before, but it was in the 20th century that the rapid development of technology happened and the lives of people changed dramatically. Nowadays, thanks to convenient electronic appliances, people can have more extra time than they did one hundred years ago and use it to do things other than daily chores. The development of technology enabled people to enjoy creative activities, the most sophisticated activities of humankind, which was possible only for the few privileged people before. The changes were good for the most part, but since they happened in a short time, people did not have time to adapt to it or consider the influence of it. As a result, the people in the 20th century left some negative assets to coming generations, such as pollution, global warming, threat of uncontrolled nuclear power, new types of crimes and so on. The first three are especially unprecedented in that they could wipe out mankind.

The invention and prevalence of the computer and the Internet
For the first time in history, people’s lives depend on machines now, and this happened in the 20th century as a result of the invention and spread of the computer. Also, no other technology has changed our lives in such a large scale than the Internet.

The influence of the airplane
The rapid development of commercial airplanes in the 20th century might be compared to the domestication of horses. It has made the world smaller and dramatically changed people’s lives. It has enabled people to visit other countries for study, on business, or on vacation easily and at low cost. Also, trade has become quicker because of faster distribution using planes.

The invention of TV
The invention of TV has given people a new source of information and a new tool of entertainment. TV has made it possible for people to learn through moving pictures with sound what is happening in remote areas or in places they cannot usually go into. People started watching news shows instead of reading newspapers or listening to the radio. TV-watching became a new entertainment. People started sharing more information than before. At the same time, TV made it easier for governments and corporations to control people’s thoughts.

The shift of hegemony
The two world wars ended imperialism of the old world. People learned it hard way that peaceful coexistence is basic to the prosperity of humankind. Although international relationships do not always follow this idea, efforts are made to compromise and cooperate and no nation can invade and occupy another country without criticism anymore. At the same time, America has become the most powerful country in the world. Replacing England after WWI, it has played the leading role in politics, business, and culture. Its military bases, trading posts, and pop culture cover all over the world now. China gained power at the end of the century, but still its GDP is second to that of the US and its military power is one-tenth of that of the US.

Globalization
The development of transportation and communication allowed corporations to do business worldwide. They can now build their branches and factories in other countries, import cheap materials from other countries, and sell their products anywhere on this planet. As a result, people all over the world use the same kind of things in their lives, and share more information than before. At the same time, it is inevitable that languages and cultures of minorities are lost in this change.

Let’s make a point
Before writing your essay, let’s write about the points you are going to make by answering the following two questions.

Question 1  What is different before and after the change?
Sample response:
I think the advent of the Internet is most important to remember in the last 100 years.
Before the Internet, the information was something that was provided by authorities in limited amounts.
However, now thanks to the Internet, most information on this planet has become available to anyone. Also, it has become possible for anyone to provide information to the public quite easily.

Your response:
I think … is most important to remember in the last 100 years.
Before …,

However, now thanks to …,

Question 2  What makes the change more important than other changes?
Sample response
The change brought by the Internet is most important to remember in that it has become the infrastructure of the world.
OR
Its impact on our society was so great that no one in our society now live absolutely independent from the Internet.

Your short response:
The change brought by … is most important to remember in that…

OR
Its impact on our society was so great that …

Essay for ideas and expressions
Barron’s Writing for the TOEFL iBT, p. 338
There were many important changes, both technological and cultural, during the twentieth century. In my opinion, the most important of these is the advances that were made in medical science. The development of vaccines and antibiotics, increased access to health care, and improvements in surgical techniques are all things that improved, and saved, the lives of people all around the world.

Vaccines and antibiotics have saved the lives of many people. Fifty years ago, many people became crippled or died from polio. Now the polio vaccine is available everywhere. In the past, people could die from even simple infections. Now penicillin and other antibiotics make it easy to cure infections.

Increased access to health care has also improved the lives of millions of people. In the past, many people lived far from hospitals or clinics. Now hospitals, clinical and health centers have been built in many parts of the world. More people have the opportunity to visit a doctor or nurse before they become very sick. They can be treated more easily. They are sick less and this leads to a better quality of life.

Improved surgical techniques make it easier to treat many medical problems. Microscopic and laser surgery techniques are more efficient than older methods, It is easier for the doctor perform them, and easier for the patient to recover. Surgery patients can return to their normal life more quickly now than they could in the past.

Everybody needs good health in order to have a good quality of life. Advances in medical science have improved the lives of people all around the world. They are improvements that are important to everyone.

As a result, people all over the world use the same kind of things in their lives, and share more information than before. At the same time, it is inevitable that languages and cultures of minorities are lost in this change.
