TOEFL iBT Independent Writing Drills 1) The best way to be a good cook is to eat good food. 2) The best way to learn a foreign language is by living in the country where the language is spoken.

Drill 1  Which of the two answers below is probably better as a response to the following question? How can you improve the other? Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The best way to be a good cook is to eat good food.

Answer A: There are many ways to learn to cook. Some go to a cooking school, and others watch cooking programs. In my opinion, however, the best way to learn how to cook is to eat good food. I have been eating good food since I was a child, so I know what a particular dish should taste like when I cook it. Thanks to my good palate, I never make a mistake in cooking. Therefore, I totally agree with the idea that the best way to be a good cook is to eat good food.

Answer B: Eating good food is a good way to be a good cook because it gives confidence not to mention a good sense of taste. However, it may not be the best way, as there are people who eat good food but have never used a cooking knife. For many people, hands-on experience is more effective than knowing the good taste in learning cooking skills. For others, watching a good cook prepare food is often better than eating the food. Still others say practice makes it perfect. Therefore, there is no royal road to learning how to cook.

Drill 2  Discuss the following question, write a short essay on it including expressions below, and write comments on or correct mistakes of each other’s essay. Do you agree with the following statement? The best way to learn a foreign language is by living in the country where the language is spoken.

● Some , and others … 「~ するものもいれば するものもいる」

● not to mention 「いうまでもなく~」

Hints for Points: Studying abroad improves listening and speaking skills. There is a 30-year foreign resident who cannot use the past tense. Learning the grammar and increasing vocabulary helps convey details of feelings and thoughts.
