Drill 1 Which of the
following answers is better as a response to the following question? Japan is
the best country in the world.
Answer A: I definitely agree
with the opinion that Japan, where I live, is the best country in the world. It
has four seasons, and the food is good. Its traditional food, called washoku,
is designated as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. We admire our parents and
cooperate with each other. We are also nice to foreigners. We are proud of our
hospitality, called omotenashi. All the important inventions like rice cookers,
karaoke, emoji, and smartphones are Japan’s. People all over the world love our
anime, manga, and video games. So, obviously we are Number One.
Answer B: I love my country
Japan, and it may be a good place to live in ― at least no one carries guns
here, except for the police, and we have universal healthcare. However, it
cannot be said that it is the best. Its minimum wage is among the lowest in the
G7 economies, and one in two children of a single parent family is poor. Its
gender equality is ranked 120th among 156 countries. We have made few remarkable inventions that contribute to the world over the last 20 years.
Moreover, we accept few immigrants and refugees, and we treat foreign workers
so badly that many disappear or die before they go home.
