What do you want most in a friend―someone who is intelligent, or someone who has a sense of humor, or someone who is reliable? Which one of these characteristics is most important to you? Use reasons and specific examples to explain your choice. 知性的な人、ユーモアのセンスのある人、信頼できる人のうちどれを友達に求めますか。これらの性格的特徴の中でどれをあなたは最も重視しますか？理由と具体例を使ってあなたの選択を説明してください。

Even if your friend has none of these good points, a friend is a friend. You like the person for some reason. However, you might wish that the person would have at least one of them. The choice would be based on merits you can expect or your value.

たとえこれらの特徴のどれひとつとして友達になかったとしても友達は友達だ。何らかの理由でその人が好きなのだ。しかし、これらひとつの内少なくともひとつあってほしいと願うかもしれない。選択は期待する利点か価値観に基づくだろう。

Sample Essay Structure A  Intelligence （知性）

【Introduction】An intelligent person has a sense of humor and is reliable, so I want an intelligent friend.

【Definition】Being intelligent is not only knowing a lot but also having ability to do well in society.

【humor】A truly intelligent person is funny without exception.

【reliability】An average level of intelligence is enough to know that reliability is the prerequisite for a workable social life.

【Conclusion】It would be nice if I had a friend who is intelligent in a real sense.

【導入】賢い人は面白くて頼れるので賢い友達が欲しい。

【定義】賢いということは物を知っているという事だけでなく社会でうまくやっていく能力があるということだ。

【Introduction】Of the three characteristics: intelligence, sense of humor, and reliability, I would prioritize sense of humor when I choose a friend.

【Reason 1】A person with a sense of humor makes me happy more than any other kind of person.

【Reason 2】It would be difficult for friends who are always joking around to have a row and break up.

【Follow-up】Intelligent people may help me in many ways but I sometimes feel nervous in front of them because of inferiority complex. As for trust, I can trust a friend who is unreliable because an unreliable person can become reliable if cared well enough.

【Conclusion】Humor saves us all. Therefore, I would like a funny person to be always with me.

【Introduction】Although intelligence or sense of humor may be preferable characteristics for a friend to have, I would like my friend to be reliable for a true friendship.

【Reason 1】I want make friends with a person who can be trusted in relationships. I want to share my secrets and discuss serious matters such as politics and religion with my friend. Therefore, I need a person who is sensible enough to keep secrets.

【Reason 2】I want a lifetime friend. I would like to grow up and share memories with my friend. his will make life rich. To keep relationship, my friend and I must trust each other.

【Why intelligence and sense of humor is not important】A friend is not a teacher. I do not care if my friend is not intelligent because friends can enjoy friendship without high-level intelligence. As long as we can share some interests, the relationship will be productive. Humor is important, but not indispensable in human relationships.

【Conclusion】I want a long-lasting relationship, so I want my friend to be reliable.

【導入】知性又はユーモアのセンスは友達が持っていると好ましい性格的特徴かもしれないが私は真の友情の為に友達は信頼のおける人であって欲しい。

【要点１】人間関係に於いて信頼される人と友達になりたい。友達と秘密を共有し政治や宗教の様な深刻な問題について議論したい。従って、秘密を守れるほど十分に思慮深い人が必要だ。

【補足】友達は先生ではない。高い知性がなくても友達関係は楽しめるので友達が知的でなくても構わない。興味を共有できる限り関係は生産的だ。ユーモアは大切だが人間関係に必須ではない。

【Main Idea】A person with a real sense of humor makes me happy more than any other kind of person.

【Explanation】Such a friend is warm-hearted and the relationship will be pure.

【Example】One of my friends makes me laugh in such a way as I feel good. His jokes are part of his attempt to avoid making me sad or embarrassed, so I do not feel forced to laugh. Rather, I appreciate his consideration and feel that he likes me. This makes me comfortable and I feel that I want to see him again.

【Wrap-up】A friend who makes me laugh in good ways is likely to be a real friend.

【主張】本当のユーモアのセンスがある人は他のどんな種類の人よりも私を幸せにしてくれる。

【説明】そういう友達は心が温かく関係が純粋になる。
