Answer Key
1.
Describe
the approach to hate speech on the Internet introduced in this interview.
A physicist deals with people involved in
hate speech online as clusters. Instead of approaching each individual,
intervention is made towards the entire group because individual elements are
interconnected through ideas in the cluster and behave as a body. There are
four policies to approach antisocial ideas shared in the clusters. The first
policy is to influence smaller groups instead of largest ones, which are backed
by figures with power. The second policy is to deal with the individuals with
distorted ideas in the group in seemingly random interactions. The third policy
is to activate individuals with common sense, who will neutralize discussions
of negative ideas. The fourth policy is to take advantage of differences of
opinions in the group so that it will break itself up.

Is
there any problem with the approach?
It is a double edged sword. Just as a
substance can be both a cure and a poison, the approach can be a positive
intervention towards hate speeches or a mechanism for a government to rule the
public. A government agency could surreptitiously maneuver people’s ideas about
each other, weaken their solidarity, and prevent them from acting against
government policies. Also, this method might not be able to deal with a pure
lone wolf who has a personal grudge to a certain group of people. The method
works on collective feelings by working with individuals that can sympathize
with others’ feelings. A pure lone wolf can interpret discussions in his own
way to go out and harm others in the real world.
